MLitt Playwriting and Dramaturgy

I recently accepted an offer at University of Glasgow for Playwriting and Dramaturgy! I was wondering if anyone else on this forum has more information about the theatre scene in Glasgow?

I am also an international student from the United States who has never left the country, so I am incredibly excited.

Hi @toridanielik,

Congratulations on your offer to study at the University of Glasgow!

As a current Theatre Studies student and a graduate of the MLitt Theatre Studies programme, I have seen a lot of great theatre in Glasgow's rich arts scene.

The University of Glasgow has theatre-focussed societies, if you would like to get involved in some on-campus theatre. These include STAG (Student Theatre at Glasgow) and the Cecillian Society (which produces musical theatre productions). More information on these is available here: https://www.glasgowunisrc.org/clubs-socs/find/

In terms of receiving house theatres, the Theatre Royal and Kings Theatre host a wide range of touring productions. Glasgow also produces a lot of great theatre, which includes productions at/by Citizens Theatre, Tramway and Tron Theatre. Glasgow is also the base city of the Scottish Ballet and the Scottish Opera, I believe.

A Play, A Pie and A Pint at Òran Mór is a great platform for new writing, which stages one-hour-long plays just a short walk from campus. They also offer student deals on tickets, and the price includes a pie and a pint.

Glasgow is also 45 minutes away from Edinburgh on the train, making the Edinburgh Fringe Festival easily commutable - which I would highly recommend attending if possible! National Theatre of Scotland also produce great work. Glasgow hosts Take Me Somewhere Festival, and the city has many venues which host cabaret, drag shows, scratch nights, etc.

I hope this was helpful!
