Parents learning allowance

Hi,

I am trying to find out if I am eligible to apply for Parents learning allowance. Me and my ex partner leave separately on different addresses and have a 6 year old. The mother is graduating in June and I have started In April. Does it matter if The mother receives the child benefit? Are there certain conditions in applying for this grant ?

Hi there,

To be eligible for the Parental Learning Allowance Grant we need to see some evidence. First would be the Childs birth certificate, and the other is proof of dependency which must be in your own name. If the benefits are under the Mother's name then you would not be eligible for it unfortunately.

Thanks, Ross

I am named on the birth certificate but not on the benefit. How does this make sense as I am a student and a parent, I have the same expenses as the other parent?

We need to see that the child is fully and financially dependent on you which is proven on the benefits documents. As the benefits are under the Mother's name then you would not qualify for the Grant.

This is flawed as £100 p/m does not prove the child isfinancially stable with one of the parents. In my case bothparents have the same financial obligations. What I get from this is you are forcing me to move thebenefit in my name to get the grant. Once I have it on myname would that satisfy this absurd requirement?

Hi there,

We need proof the child is dependent on you and this means either having child benefit, universal credit or tax credit for the child in your name. If you don't have this, then unfortunately we can't award Parents Learning Allowance to you.

Thanks,
Claire

If my course starts in April and I will have a child benefit document with my name on it from 15 June. Can I apply for the Parents learning allowance once It’s on my name ? What I’m asking is: Do I need to have to child benefits document on my name at the start of the academy year or I can apply for the parents learning allowance through the academic year ?

HI there,

To award PLA for the full AY the letter must have been issued prior to the start of the AY or show a Child Benefit ‘award start date’ prior to the start of the AY.

If the 'awarded from' date shown is during the AY, we can only award PLA from the quarter in which child dependency has been confirmed.

Thanks,
Claire

It still doesn’t make sense in terms of financial needs but I understand. Thanks
