does anyone know why the granal membrane has to be selectively permeable?

The electron transport chain moves H+ ions into the thylakoid lumen. If the membrane of the thylakoid was completely permeable, these H+ ions would just move back into the stroma of the chloroplast without passing through ATP synthase.
