UAL Foundation Diploma 2024/25 Questions!

Hi! I got an email offering me a place for the foundation yesterday.
Just wondering what people's experiences doing a foundation year, specifically at UAL, have been like.
I am also confused about how many spaces there are at Lime Grove. Does anyone know? Apparently it's about 1,000
I have also received an offer from the City&Guilds Foundation, and am very conflicted about where I want to go. Anyone in the same boat??

Congrats!!

People have said positive things about the UAL foundation year in the past, but have had issues due to it being more of a sink or swim environment as students didn't receive a whole lot of individual support (especially at CSM). There are concerns about the course size basically doubling and it being the first cohort, but UAL as an institution is still pretty good regardless.

City and Guilds is also a really good school for art and haven't had as much disruption (+ more individual support, guidance + focused resources). I don't think they offer free spaces for those under 19, so I'm assuming you're willing to pay the fee? This is my opinion (please take with a grain of salt), but I think that City and Guilds might be better if you're not worried about fees or want to max out your chances to get onto an undergraduate course at UAL (but it's a good school that will probs enable you to make a very competitive BA application anyway, so maybe not as much of an issue?)

Ultimately it's your choice - I wish you the best of the luck and I'm sure you'll thrive wherever you go!

Also, there are going to be approximately 1200 students, half international + home each for the entire foundation course at Lime Grove for 2024/ 2025

Hi! I ended up choosing the UAL foundation. I hope it is the right decision, but I suppose I won't know until I'm there. I'm sorry you didn't get into UAL!! I hope that City and Guilds works well for you ))

Hiya! Just finished my foundation year at ual's ccw course. A lot of the tutors on my course were super lovely and supportive. If anyone does go into Film & Animation you will deffo be in safe hands. I can't say what it will be like with the tutors who were on the csm course- but the ccw lot are really great. I went to City & Guilds open day ages ago and it's very fine art based- I feel like with UAL foundation you can experiment and bring ideas from other specialisms into your practice and overall become a well-rounded artist. Also City & Guilds is TINYY. Would not recommend to anyone who is claustrophobic at all. If anyone has anymore questions please feel free to reply or DM

Hey, i was just wondering what the hours and timetable are like at ual foundation? how many hours are taught and then do you to go in even on days where you are not taught?

I'm so conflicted on which foundation course I should take, ravensbourne (Foundation Diploma in Artand Design (Design andMedia)) or UAL (Foundation Diploma in Art and Design). I got offered a place by both universities but I don't know which one is better? I attended an open day for Ravensbourne and offers day it was alright. But unfortunately I wasn't able to find any open days for ual to get a taste of the envirmient and stuff as I think they aren't offering any as it's late down in the year. And so I don't know how to make a decision. I did a bit of research online looking at peoples review of both unis, but I’ve found a lot of negative reviews on ual which makes me wanna stir away from it. But then at the same time they are one of the top art school so should I miss this out on this opportunity or not.
I don't know what to do can someone give me advice please asap. And can someone please tell me their experience if they attended either one of these.

Thanks

So sorry I didn’t reply to this sooner, I barely check Student Room😅 You’re in 3 days a week. Since, I was in communications, I was in Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. Whilst other pathways were in different days but everyone was in on a Tuesday. However, this could change because of the new merge. Lessons start at 10:30, lunch from 13:00 till 14:00. Then second class from 14:00 till 16:30. On days that we don’t have any lessons, you’re free to come into the building and complete any coursework. I commuted to uni so I would stay at home unless I had to do coursework that required me to be in the building. If you’re going to get a job or you already have one, try to work only weekends because sometimes ,you will have to come in for non-taught days to complete work etc. Hope this helps!

Hi! I finished UAL Foundation at Camberwell a couple of months ago. I have no regrets about this course; I loved it. I was like you last year, worrying about the vibe of ual, but honestly, you’ll find your people easily. UAL foundation tutors were so sweet and helpful. They genuinely do care about you. They will only get annoyed if you’re not doing any work or don’t care about the course, which is understandable. Also, with UAL, you can visit any campus to meet even more people.

I went to an open day for Ravensbourne about two years ago; it was kinda a big red flag. The Animation BA tutor was kinda talking down on the uni, saying there’s no societies, nobody tries to go out and make friends. He also thought the Ravensbourne Foundation was useless if you wanted to go into animation. I was surprised how much this tutor was talking badly about the uni, especially how it was an open day 😃

Hi there! I hope you don’t mind me jumping in here, as I just want to say thank you for your feedback and I'm really sorry to hear that you had such a negative experience at our open day.

That is certainly not how we would expect our staff to be portraying the university and we will investigate to find out what happened on that occasion. Please do contact us if you wanted to discuss in more detail on [email protected].

Just to stress that it is not an accurate reflection of the culture at Ravensbourne University London, we are proud to have a really vibrant and friendly campus with all students situated together on the bustling North Greenwich Peninsula, surrounded by loads of great places to eat, drink and socialise.

Best of luck on your study journey! 🤗

Hi, I am interested in Animation. How much exposure do students get in Animation on the foundation course.

Hi! Film & Animation on Foundation was great; the tutors were super lovely and understanding. They will give you many references, so be sure to note them, as it will help you a lot with your work. You won’t be expected to know everything from the start, so they will guide you through all the steps needed to make a short film. It is fast-paced, especially in part 2 projects, but they’re understanding and supportive.

Also I’m not sure what you mean by exposure in animation? Do you mean how often you animate in the course?
