Dropping out of my degree after already starting it to pursue something else?

For context, I have just finished my first year of a Pharmacy degree. When I was at school I always wanted to do dentistry, but a combination of thinking I wouldn't get the grades and just general fear of rejection led me to take the easy route out and apply to pharmacy instead, something which I never particularly wanted to do, but I figured it was still a job in a healthcare setting and after starting the degree I would just get used to it. I really enjoyed my year in university, however after finishing the year I feel highly unmotivated and unfulfilled that this could be my career. I enjoy the content of the degree, however the lack of hands on activity doesn't excite me. I enjoy talking to patients but I wish I could physically help them rather than just prescribing and providing advice. It's all of this that has brought back my feelings of wanting to pursue dentistry.
So my question is this. Is it worth me dropping out now, taking a full year out and applying to dentistry, with absolutely no guarantee I'll get in or no backup plan, or should I stick pharmacy out as I have only done a year of it and hope it gets better as the years go on.
Just to add, I got A*AA at A-Level and 9999999999 at GCSE, so grades wise I would be in with a shot but that means very little these days in the brutal dentistry application!

Hi Bethany,

I can see how you might be quite stressed with your situation! Personally, I’d recommend pursuing dentistry if that’s what you’ve always been interested in and you’re not too keen on the pharmacy. It’s so important to do something you love and With those grades you definitely have a great chance - NHS are crying out for dentists too! Don’t see it as you’re dropping out, you’re just reevaluating career options which people do all the time at any age. And if you’ve genuinely enjoyed your first year then it’s all good experience.

I’d suggest researching properly into the uni/dentristy course you’re interested in and maybe speak to a careers advisor for some more guidance. Is there another route you can go down with a pharmacy degree?

Wish you all the best,

Hey Bethany,

I am in the same position as you but for biomedical Sciences and willing to do Dentistry. Hated my course but pushed through till the 2nd year, decided I wanted to drop it in the 3rd. Is there any way you can tell me what steps you took next after you realised this? I've always been conflicted in my career choices since ive been big on art and science and never really knew anything that combined them. And covid never gave my year a chance to explore our career pathways. When I found dentistry I fell in love with it. So if you can help me I'd really appreciate it!

You can always defer the course for a year and work in healthcare until then and see . This will give you time to think and analyse

Hey thug, I'm in the exact same position as you, except I already dropped my biomed course in 2023 and took a year out to evaluate my career choices as well. I also found dentistry to be the perfect combination of my two passions art and science. I wish I had better self esteem or had a better careers counsellor at my school who could have introduced me to dentistry sooner. But i never even considered it at that point and only began thinking abt it last year. You're not alone. I hope bethany answers soon for the both of us.

Hi there,

This sounds like a tough situation and it's good that you are thinking about this now before you get into your second or even third year. It's good to think about it so you can make the decision that is best for you.

I would say that it is a good idea to do some research into the course that you are interested in and see if it is what you really want to do. You could make a pros and cons list of each option too to see if this helps you to make your mind up a little bit.

I think it would be a good idea to talk to your academic advisor too. They are there for you and will be able to help you a little bit with this decision. A careers advisor at your uni would be a good idea too as they can talk you through your option and see if there is anything that they can help you with or talk to you about. If you have any questions you can talk to them about this too to help you make your mind up.

Talking to your friends and family is a good idea too as they will know you and can help you with this. Talk them through your choices and see what they think about them.

Ultimately you want to be happy so you should do the thing that is most likely to make you happy. It'e better to drop out now than in a years time so if you think that dentistry is what you want to do as a career, it is worth pursuing this.

I hope some of this helps,

Lucy -SHU student ambassador.
