How would I go about establishing a society?

I'm currently a first year student at Lancaster and I have an idea for a society. It's not really a unique idea, and some other universities already have something similar, but I've noticed Lancaster doesn't have one.

I was hoping someone could tell me about the process of establishing/enquiring about establishing a society. So far I have 2 other people who would be interested in helping with the new society, but is there a minimum number needed to start it? Ideally I'd like it to be established in time for freshers in October, is this a realistic timeline?

Contact your Student's Union! They'll likely have info on their website on how to set up a society🙂 - Chloe

Hi Anon,

To set up a society you’ll need to contact the societies team at the student Union.
You can email them at [email protected]

I haven’t set up a society myself before but I do know friends that set up societies and I helped to run a society for 4 years during my undergraduate degree.

Usually a society will need a minimum exec (students who run the society) of a President, treasurer and general secretary.

I am not sure how long it would take to set up a society. I’m sure the students Union will be able to advise you on this and confirm how many people you’d need to be able to start one.

Hope this helps!

Hi Anon,
I'd recommend speaking to the students union if your looking to start a new society, i'm sure if you pop into there office they'll be happy to chat.
Good luck with starting the society!
