Student Finance: A Rough Guide and Where to Access Help!

Hello TSR! How are we?

April showers are in full swing this spring (at least where I am!):titan:

As we get closer towards the summer, with the new Academic Year in September/October, we thought we’d check-in and discuss any questions you may have about Student Finance! :curious:

We’ve previously done a bit of an info post about how Student Finance works for those considering applying, if you're holding offers, or those interested on behalf of someone!
You can check that post out here: Tips for Student Finance Worries - The Student Room

An overview:

Student Finance is a government loan for UK University fees (Tuition Fee Loan) and to some extent living costs (Maintenance Loan). Student Finance England (SFE) is the provider usually for UK Home Students that may not have studied before and are residents or citizens of the UK in England.

Just in-case, it’s worth noting that there are separate application portals and different branches of Student Finance support if you reside in Northern Ireland, Wales, or Scotland (Scotland only - SAAS).:fyi:

Eligibility is best checked with the experts SFE themselves but you can get an idea, of if you are able to apply, from the advice on their page here: Student finance for undergraduates: Eligibility - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

If you are a current student at undergraduate level that has received SFE funding for this year (2023-24), perhaps coming to the end of your first year, then you must re-apply for SFE funding.

You do this through the same account that you created originally! Log back in to see how to do this and what you may need. You can also Contact Student Finance England for support with this!

SFE are also available on TSR for general queries and there are a lot of resources here: Ask Student Finance England :keyboard:

Here are a few key dates to keep an eye out for if you have applied or are planning to apply to University this September/October (2024-25)!

17 May 2024: Student finance deadline!
Friday 17 May 2024 is the deadline for new full-time undergraduate students to apply for student finance.

21 June 2024: Student finance deadline!
Friday 21 June 2024 is the deadline for continuing full-time undergraduate students to re-apply for your student finance.

1 September 2024: Start of the new academic year

You can apply online for the following academic years:

2024 to 2025 (full-time undergraduate students only)

You can still apply for funding up to 9 months after the first day of the academic year for your course.

Applications for 2024 to 2025 will open:

in May 2024 for part-time undergraduate students

in June 2024 for postgraduate students

You do not need a confirmed place to apply. Payments are scheduled but not completed until confirmation of your studies has taken place between the University and Student Finance after you have enrolled and registered onto your degree programme. You still have time for applications, choices, etc.!:smartass:

The fab team at TSR also have a Student Finance Zone with resources, if you’re not sure, or want to see a timeline of an SFE Application, or for SFE’s socials - https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/student-finance/full-time-undergraduate-student-finance-applications-are-now-open :rave:
