Film and Literature MA at The Uni of York

Hi, I have been accepted to study Film and Lit MA at the uni of york and was wondering if anyone has done, or is doing this course? I’ve heard good things about York’s English department, but I cannot find the thoughts and experiences of anyone who has done this course. If you have done this course, how was your experience? What was the work load like? What modules would you recommend and steer clear of? Any tips or comments in general?

My undergrad was not English or film related so I was wondering what I could do to prepare? I have been looking over a lot of core undergrad literature and films and reading literary theory, as well as looking at a few core readings of the modules I’m interested in.

Also, on the website they show four?(I think it’s four) optional modules to choose from. Are they the only modules you can choose from, or can you choose out with your department?

Hello, it just happens that one of our students currently on duty on Unibuddy is an English student but planning to go on to an MA in Film Studies. I'd really recommend chatting to our students on Unibuddy as they can tell you about their first hand experience of departments and courses but also the wider university and city.

The department have got back to me and asked me to give you the following reply:

I recommend you contact the convenor of the MA, Erica Sheen, who's contact details can be found via our website here. Erica should be able to help with any course specific questions, such as how to prepare for the course. We will also be sending welcome letters and reading lists out in July, which will also give you some guidance on what we recommend you read over the summer.
Regarding the modules choices, we will likely be running those listed on the website, but there are also many more to choose from. There will be about 15 modules each Semester to choose from. Students will also have the opportunity to take modules from other departments too. If you would like the full list, you can email us at [email protected] and we will send the list across.
