Help in English Literature OCR A-Level

Hi, I'm doing independent study as a private candidate for english lit. I do Ibsen / Rosetti and 1984 and Handmaids Tale and Hamlet. I don't know how to get an A* without a tutor as I can't get my work marked and thus can't get feedback. Can anyone who's getting A*s give me any help or advice? How to revise, how to structure essays etc.

Any help is significantly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi, I am an AS student, so I am not sure if this would help you, but here are a few tips that helped me in my essay writing:
1) PETAL paragraphs (Point, Evidence, Technique, Analysis, Link)
2) Always try to have an argument in your thesis which you link back to at the end of each of your paragraphs.
3) Summarise your essay in the conclusion, evaluate your points and how you found the book in the context of the question.
4) If you are doing the extract based question, use this to help structure your essay. ICSILC (Intro, context, structure, ideas, language and conclusion)
5) Always add contextual detail. So even if the context isn't mentioned in the text you are doing, do research on the setting, era, author's life, how the text reflects the author's own life and the audience/his purpose for writing it.
6) Use longer quotes to analyse language instead of randomly throwing in words and phrases into the essay. Embeding is useful but when you are talking about the effect created by a specific language technique use longer quotes (add an ellipsis if it is too lengthy).
7) Use discourse markers to connect paragraphs together.
8) Read sample Lit essays on OCR sites to get an idea of how well scoring essays are structured and analyse in detail. This might be a little controversial, but I find using Chat GPT also helpful sometimes to give an idea of how to write essays because the answers given are often quite sophisticated and are structured well. However, using Chat GPT will not give the evidence and correct knowledge required of the specific text. It will only help in the broader sense and is not specific and deep which what essays require.

Hope this helps. All the best!

Most efficient way is to look at A* structures. I found many for hamlet both parts in OCR - and following these I managed to get my grade from a D to B, which I struggled much with before. Just keep practicing them while you refer to the exemplar structure and then follow the structure of the one you completed, and so on. Eventually it will become natural and you can time yourself with the new structure and in times condition. I really Hope this helps !!!!
