Beard growth

Hi, I'm an 18 y/o male.

I've been trying to grow a beard for the past 2 years or so. The problem is it's mostly just sideburns and neckhair, so I effectively have a chinstrap. That would be fine except my hair is curly and not very dense, so it looks pretty patchy and weird. I normally trim to 5mm. All my friends say it's terrible

So my questions are:
1. I don't have much hair growth in the direction of my cheeks, unlike some of my friends - is this normal and can I expect much growth in the future?
2. Should I grow my beard out or continue trimming? Or just trim the neck hair?
3. I naturally have a weaker jawline and so far my beard isn't helping to fix that. Does it need to be fuller to do so? Or do I need to shape it? Or...?

Any help would be much appreciated, thanks!
