Bristol/Bath Engineering Chances

I recently got given alternative offers from both Bristol and Bath after applying to Aerospace Engineering with predicted 3A* in maths, further maths and computer science, and A in physics. I am quite set on going to one of these two universities (mainly Bristol), and think I might take a year out and apply again next year, but I’m doubting whether there is even any point given my grades are already quite high and I was still rejected. Can anyone tell me if I have a chance next year or whether I should just accept one of my other offers which I don’t particularly care about?

It might make a difference that if you apply for next year you'll be applying with achieved grades rather than predicted.

You could also look to see if you can get any relevant work experience in a gap year, and even if not, if you work during the gap year it will put you in a financially better position when you do start -- whatever university you end up going to.

That is a good point, I’ve heard that some universities don’t care whether they’re predicted or achieved but I will look into Bristol/Bath’s outlook on it. I also applied in January of this year and think it might make a difference to get my application in in October instead (this might not matter, cause they say they give all applications equal thought, but they definitely accepted people in November with lower predicted’s than mine)? But I think I might try and get a place on results day through clearing (very unlikely due to the popularity of the course, I know) and if that doesn’t work I’m considering an RAF engineering apprenticeship which hopefully will improve my application significantly, thanks for your reply!

Both Bath and Bristol are off the scale for the competition for Mech Eng places - Bath in particular - and there will not be spaces in Clearing for either of them. So, either accept the alternative course and refocus on that, or go to another Uni for Mech.

If you have achieved 3A*, join the alternate course option Bath, then you can either request for change in course before December or move to mechanical department next academic year. There are people from Civil , physics moved to Aerospace in subsequent year at bath

This is never guaranteed - it depends on A level grades, spaces being available etc.

Starting any degree in the hope of a subject transfer is risky because of this, ie. you could get stuck on a degree course you don't really want to do.

Hi, I was in the same position at the same time as you. now in a gap year with A*A*AA and re-applying to bath and Bristol. Im interested to hear how your results went and what you are doing now.

Hey, im in a similar position this year applied for mechanical MENG at bath and bristol with A*A*A*A* maths/further/physics/chem. i was really set on bath so im considering whether i should take a gap year and reapply next year to both. although i am doubting whether i would have any better a chance that this cycle or whether i should take the alternative course. i would greatly appreciate any insight/ideas anyone has, and an update as what happened to you.

If it's helpful at all, I applied twice to Bristol for Aero, once with 4 A*s predicted, and again this year with 4 A*s achieved, and both times got offered alternative courses: firstly electrical, then civil engineering. I asked them about it and they said "I didn't score highly enough". On what? They do none of their own testing, so what are they even on about? I'm lucky to be going to Cambridge instead, but if I hadn't got that place I would've been very disappointed by their decision. I did get an offer from Bath both years for Aero. I think the truth is these unis are too competitive to not have interviews and admissions test, and it's getting a bit silly now.
Just my experience, not sure whether it's applicable to your situation.
