Changes to UoB term dates and assessment period questions

Hi,

I see that Bristol has changed its approach to teaching from Sept 2024.

https://www.bristol.ac.uk/students/updates/academic-year-changes/

Welcome week is a lot earlier in September (9th), assessments are before Christmas not after and the academic year finishes in May now not June.

Does this apply to all courses?

I am specifically interested in medicine, and wanted to know if there are different dates for clinical subjects. If so, are they published?

I think it might be a good thing that exams are before Christmas not after but it does mean that will need to be more focused in the first term. Not so fun with settling into uni.

My main worry is accomm for year 2. I understand that getting year 2 onwards accomm is still difficult. When do the halls of residence contracts end, and when do the follow on accommodation open up from?

If you look on Rightmove, most seem to be July. What happens between May and July if you want accomm then?

What happens between July and Sept if you aren't in Bristol?

Do you just have to pay full rent anyway? Or is it a holding charge ?

How does this work? Am worried about both extra costs and practicalities given Bristols housing market. Any advice?

https://www.bristol.ac.uk/university/dates/ contains the teaching and assessment dates (and more) together with a note that says "Please note that the academic dates above relate to the standard teaching, examination and term dates for students at the University. Some undergraduate and postgraduate programmes do not follow standard term dates; we will inform students on these programmes."

My guess is that Medicine might not follow standard term dates. You could try contacting Bristol's admissions team for advice on this: https://www.bristol.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/contacts/

University accommodation seems to have a variety of different contract lengths. Not all students are undergraduates; postgrad students also need accommodation, and many of them are in Bristol throughout the whole academic year. So accommodation providers offer longer contracts than just September-to-May/June. There's information about tenancy dates on Bristol's accommodation page at https://www.bristol.ac.uk/accommodation/apply/terms/

What landlords charge over the summer is likely to vary. Some might charge less during the summer; others might not. I can't see that the changes to Bristol's term dates would have any effect on what landlords charge over the summer.
