Transport costs DSA

Hi, does anyone know how much per mile DSA will help with?

I will be using my own car for university it is not a mobility car and I don't receive Pip or anything else. was wondering what help will I be able to get for each mile to and from university. I have heard that you can claim mileage costs instead of using taxis.

Also if its an NHS course do you get help when you go to placement for mileage.

Thank you.

It depends if you qualify for the transport costs of DSA
For example if you have dyslexia and are staying at home then they won't provide transport costs as you can get public transport
It is only viable if there is a reason you can't use public transport
I've only heard of them funding taxi's rather than a car so unfortunately I'm not sure

I think the important thing is that DSA only covers costs that a student without disability would not incur. You would need to show that your disability means that there is no other way you could attend other than by driving yourself, which seems a difficult one to achieve really.

Have you submitted an application for DSA with SFE? I’m just in the process of submitting evidence for mine and I believe that I then have an assessment with them before I know if I qualify for travel costs.

£0.24 per mile minus the cost of public transport for the same route. SFE will accept annual passes divided by 365 to calculate cost.

I tried to claim fuel costs as I can't take public transport and I drive. Sadly they won't cover it as they see it as a normal expense any student living at home and commuting would have so they will not cover it.

Yes you have an assessment and they are really good at covering things but transport costs are really hard to get covered. I can't take public transport but as I drive they won't cover fuel costs. Their logic is that any other student that commutes to university would have those costs and they are not due to being disabled. It sounds like they only cover taxis if you can't take public transport either due to serious mental health issues or due to being in a powered wheelchair and needing a specialist adapted taxi.

Pretty much everything from physical equipment to specialist software. They will ask what you struggle with and then see what they can do to support you.
