Transferring with bad A levels

I did my A levels last year and absolutely botched them, getting E,E,U. Now admittedly these are very low grades, however I managed to scrape into a foundation year at Cardiff Met, a very mid tier uni. I’m about to finish foundation year and am hoping that I could try and ace first year, and then transfer to a better uni.
Question is, would this even work with my A levels and what chances do I have for transferring to a Russell group uni, if my foundation & first year marks were high enough?

You can apply but it’s common for universities to require you to repeat a year if you don’t meet their standard entry requirements. That would mean that you wouldn’t get a tuition fee loan for year 1 of a new degree.

You can try but the chances are that you wont get anywhere with this idea and you'll finish your degree at Cardiff Met - however, if you are determined to work hard and you get a First, postgrad at a 'higher' Uni is more than possible and that might be a wiser long term plan.

Doesn’t the foundation year OP did count as the ‘gift’ year?

Yes - but OP would have 2 years of previous study and would be starting in year 1 of a new course. So the gift year is only one year that leaves 1 unfunded year - no tuition fee loan for year 1 of the new degree
