Funding for Dietetics (pre registration / exemption funding)

Hi, I have a BSc in psychology and I am considering pursuing social work but I have always had a great interest in dietetics and medical school.

Is it possible to receive funding for MSc Dietetics (pre-reg) and then MSW Social Work afterwards or vice versa? Is there any specific/best order I should do these in to receive funding?

Further, how is a medical school degree (MBBS and/or GEM) funded? I look forward to hearing from you 🙏🏼

Hi there,

Dietetics can be an exception, which means we won't count your previous study at all. Do you have a particualr course and university that you're interested in?

Is is Masters in Social Work that you're thinking of doing?

Can you tell us more about the medical degree, is this undergraduate or postgraduate medicine?

Thanks, Graeme

Hi Graeme,

Thank you so much for your response.

I’m considering Kingston for the MSW, and UCL for the MSc in Dietetics.

Preferably in that order, however, I’ll action your advice.

Finally, I’m hoping to enrol in medicine (either MBBS or GEM) at Kings - Pending which of the two pathways I would be granted entry to and funding for.

I look forward to hearing from you.
Hi nl06,

So you are looking to study a Masters in Dietetics and then after that to study a Medicine degree?

Thanks,
Calum

Hi Calum,

Yes, I would like to study the MSc in Dietetics followed by a medicine degree, if possible.

I just want to ensure that a MSW in relation to my BSc in psychology first is funded and would not prevent funding for the MSc or MBBS/GEM courses after?

I am also contemplating whether to do the MSW or the MSc first or if it would not matter as both will receive the same funding?

Hi there,

Can you confirm each course full name, university along with how long the course is and potential start date? We can then look these up on the system.

Thanks,
Claire

Hi,

Sure, these are the courses and universities I am considering:

Master of Social Work (MSW) - Kingston University London (2 years, potential start Sept 2024 or 2026)

&

Dietetics MSc - UCL (2 years, potential start Sept 2024 or 2026)

OR

BSc (Hons) Dietetics - The University of Hertfordshire (3 years, potential start Sept 2024 or 2026)

Finally

Medicine MBBS - Kings College London

(5-6 years, potential start Sept 2026 or 2028)

OR

Graduate Entry Medicine Programme MBBS - Kings College London (4 years, potential start Sept 2026 or 2028)

Thank you 🙏🏼
Hi there,

This is dependant on when you're looking to begin the course. Eligibility rules and regulations can always change on a year to year basis so for September 2025 onwards rules can always change. I would also advise contacting us on the spring prior to your intake just to confirm so we have accurate and up to date information based on the courses.

Just to confirm your previous study, is it just the BSc in psychology you have studied in the past and do you hold any other qualifications or have began a Postgraduate course at anytime?

The MSc Dietetics is an exception course (regardless of previous study) and you'd apply on an undergraduate application. For the masters in Social Work, you can apply to this as long as you haven't studied a Postgraduate course before. But again, always check prior if you're looking to commence this in 2026.

The BSC Dietetics is again an exception course so previous study rules wouldn't apply

Medicine courses funding can differ depending on the length (4 years or less, or 4 years or more) and again rules for these can change by 2028 when you're looking to apply.

Thanks, Jason

Hi Jason,

Thank you for the response.

I have not started or completed any postgrad courses. I only hold the BSc which I graduated from less than a year ago.

Just to confirm, I could still receive funding for the MSW if I were to take the MSc in dietetics first, as Dietetics is considered an undergraduate course? Or would I need to do the MSW first then Dietetics?

Hi there,

Yes, that's right - if you get the Masters in Dietetics you can't then get the Social Work Masters funded by us.

So, if you get the Social Work Masters, you can then study the Dietetics course since it's an exception to the normal previous study rules.

Thanks, Graeme

Thank you for clarifying Graeme.

What is the funding available at present for medical school please (MBBS - 4 years & GEM - 5-6 years) ?

Sorry if you've already said, but is this undergraduate or graduate entry medicine?

GEM is graduate entry which I hope to be accepted on but may have to start on the MBBS so would like to know the funding for both please.
Hi there.

For Undergraduate Medicine if you already hod and honour's degree or higher, you can apply for Maintenance loan only as well as supplementary grants and/or DSA where applicable for years 1-4, and a reduced rate Maintenance loan for any subsequent years.

For graduate entry Medicine

Tuition Fees
Year 1 The student will have to self fund the first £3,465, however a tuition fee loan will be available for the remainder of up to £5,785.

Years 2-4 - The first £3,715 will be paid by the Department of Health and a tuition fee loan will be available for the remainder of up to £5,535.

Maintenance Funding

Year 1 Can apply for a Full Means Tested Maintenance Loan and Supplementary Grants.

Years 2-4 Can apply for the Income Assessed NHS Bursary and Supplementary Grants from the NHS. You can only apply to SFE for a Reduced Rate Maintenance Loan.

Thanks, Leah.

Thank you for clarifying Leah.

What funding would be available for the MSW in social work? Would it be maintenance and tuition? I was told there are social work bursaries?

Hi there, it would be the funding Leah advised above. For any bursaries would be through your university directly. So it would be best to check directly with them regarding eligibility for them. Thanks, Jason

Hi Jason,

I’ve had a look again at the MSW at Kingston and I have discovered it is also a pre - registration course.

As it would also receive exemption funding, would I need to choose between one pre registration course or the other? (MSW Social Work or MSc Dietetics)?

Alternatively, is it possible to receive funding for more than one pre registration course if taken one after another?

If you could please kindly confirm and advise at your best convenience, it would be greatly appreciated.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Hi there,

Social Work doesn't normally count as a Postgraduate Healthcare course, can you tell us where you're seeing this? Is it on the university's website?

Thanks, Graeme

Hi Graeme,

Yes, it’s on their website stating that the MSW is considered as an undergraduate pre-registration course on their “How to Apply” page.

https://www.kingston.ac.uk/postgraduate/courses/social-work-msw/apply-now/

I believe this could be as we must register as a social worker upon graduation and thereby, can work for the NHS / in healthcare settings or roles. Ultimately, becoming a healthcare worker after graduation.
Hi there. This isn't classed as an exception course for SFE purposes for the MSW. This course would attract the Postgraduate Masters funding. Thanks, Leah.
