study abroad in canada

I'm looking at doing a study abroad; thinking of Canada, however I have 3 choices of uni and I don't know which to go for!
It's either Calgary, Guelph or York for unis.
I've always wanted to go to Canada, so if anyone has anything about these unis, is there one which is better for the abroad experience?

Hi there,

While I didn't go to Canada, I have just returned from my study abroad year in the US. Hopefully I can help a little!

It can definitely be really difficult to do your own research and get a feel for what the universities will be like when you are so far away. I think with whatever research you do, there will always be slight doubt. I absolutely found this to be the case, but don't let it deter you. It's such a wonderful experience!

I'd recommend thoroughly looking through the university websites, particularly at course/class pages, statistics, local opportunities, and extracurriculars. I think looking through social media pages is also super helpful, as a lot of universities make some awesome content. I also researched local statistics for each area, shopping prices and transport, and using Google Maps to get a feel for the local area (and other places you'd like to travel to).

To understand a little more about experiences of exchange students there, you might be able to find people on social media. Does the university have an international account, possibly on Instagram or Facebook? Do they have a 'talk to a student' feature on their webpage? Do they have blogs or posts from previous exchanges on what it might be like there?

Research is incredibly important, but for me it felt like there was always something missing, no matter how much I looked at. Do what you can, and it will absolutely pay off! Studying abroad is an incredible experience, and I wouldn't change it for the world.

If you have any more questions, please just ask! I hope this helps,

Isabella 🙂
