I'm a little bit disappointed. That you as a forthcoming Data Science student are considering spending two and half thousand pounds on a laptop to support your studies.
If I were looking to employ a data science specialist for a project and I had 2 roughly equally good candidates and one of them had spent £2500 on a macbook pro whilst the other had spent £150 on a used business laptop on which they'd installed Linux, I know which of the 2 I'd have more faith and trust in.
How about applying some logical thinking to this investment decision?
Starting with the size. By establishing your mobility profile. Will you be carrying the laptop around campus a lot with you? Will you take it on the bus or train a lot with you? Or will it mostly be transported in the back of your car? Are you built like a rugby prop forward? Or are you of a more normal build?
Followed by the platform. Windows, MacOs or Linux? Why pick MacOS over Linux?
In some ways the £2500 macbook pro is a great laptop. But come on! The price! Soldered RAM and SSD! Glued in battery! The whole thing is designed to extract more money from you in 3 to 5 years time, after milking you of a huge wad of cash now.
