Best strategy for selecting course and university in 7 steps :)

Hello! As a fellow student at DMU, I'm here to guide you through the daunting task of selecting the right university course. I am sharing my personal experience and the way I did my choosing (or it’s better to say “The way I should have done it haha”).

1. Identifying Your Interests

Start by brainstorming what genuinely interests you. Write down all your hobbies, subjects you enjoy studying, or topics you find intriguing. This could be anything from programming and applied physics to business and history. This process helps you understand your passions and inclinations.

2. Weighing Practical Aspects

After establishing your interests, consider the practical elements of your potential careers. These could include factors like the demand for certain roles in the industry, the initial salary expectations, and the speed at which you can enter the field. Considering these aspects can guide you towards a career that not only interests you but also holds promising prospects.

3. Evaluating Potential Careers

Next, cross-match your interests with potential roles in the industry. Assess each role based on the practical parameters you established earlier. This process allows you to create a list of jobs that genuinely captivate you and align with your career aspirations.

4. Selecting an Appropriate Degree

With a list of potential jobs in mind, you can identify the degree needed for these roles by exploring online job postings. My top and main tip - choose the course before choosing the university!!!

5. Approaching the Process Systematically

The process of choosing the right course can be overwhelming. To manage it better, break down the decision-making process into smaller, more manageable steps. This systematic approach helps you find the perfect course without overwhelming yourself.

6. Seeking Real Experiences

Once you've selected the right course, the next step is to find the right university. Instead of relying solely on rankings, consider real experiences. Attend open days, take part in trial courses, and engage with current students to gain insights into the university's environment and course structure. You could also use services like "The Ambassador Platform" to connect with students and learn about their experiences. Additionally, don't hesitate to consult people who are currently studying or working in your field of interest. They can provide real-world insights and advice based on their experiences.

7. Evaluate Your Decision

Once you've made your choice, take the time to reflect. Does the decision align with your personal aspirations and interests? Does it set you up for success and fulfilment in your future career?

Remember, the decision is personal. Explore your options, gather information, and trust your instincts.

Good luck with your endeavours! Feel free to share your thoughts and experiences in the comments below.

Take care,
Ilya
