Uni of leicester for Law

I'm considering accepting my offer for law at Leicester. Can you honestly assess if it's a reputable law school if my exams don’t go so great? I'm confirming my place at Southampton for law, but I also received an alternative offer from Bristol for social policy and sociology after being rejected for law there.

I'm a bit uncertain about what decision to make. :/
Hi @takimura

I understand this process of accepting and rejecting universities can be filled with uncertainty which is completely understandable!

Just to reassure you, the Law school at Leicester has a great reputation. Looking at some of the rankings, it is listed as top 20 best universities for law according to The Guardian, and best 30 according to Times Higher Education 2024.

As a Law student you have access to the Law Library, you also gain practical skills through an award-winning Pro Bono Society, which offers hundreds of volunteer roles across an extensive range of free legal advice and support projects. Working alongside legal professionals, you can advise real clients and support the local community. The projects support local and global communities, including investigations of miscarriage of justice in the UK and for prisoners on death row in the USA.

Leicester has a strong reputation within the legal profession and our annual Law Fair attracts leading employers - all five Magic Circle firms have visited Leicester to recruit our students. The full range of legal employers visit Leicester to recruit students from the Law School.

I hope this helps you with making your decision, have you visited Leicester campus yet?

I second all of this. I am a Leicester Uni law grad and loved every minute of my time there. Law firms hold Leicester in high regard and I know many graduates who have reached partnership at numerous sizeable and reputable firms.

this is so lovely to hear some people are under the impression that if it’s not a Russell group you won’t have a career

I agree that this is definitely a common misconception that a lot of students hold! However, I would definitely argue that is an outdated perspective which most law firms no longer hold. As a current Leicester Law student (a non-Russell student) I have managed to obtain several opportunities at top London law firms and a Vacation Scheme at a Magic Circle firm.

I hope that any non-Russell students reading this realise that the university that you study at is not a barrier to your aspirations. If you work hard, achieve good results and have experiences to evidence your skills and aspirations, then there is nothing preventing you from achieving your career goals.

Make sure that you aspire for what you want, and not what you think you are able to achieve!
