Is Exeter welcoming to people of colour?

I have an offer for Exeter 2024 entry and was wondering whether I would be able to fit in there as a black person. I visited and it seemed really nice but I am still worried about racism as I would be spending three years there.

I also have an offer from there, I’ve spoken to some black students that go there, they’ve all said they liked it and would recommend joining the acs to make u feel more comfortable. Ive seen some replies on tiktok saying each year the diversity increases but I also saw a girl do a review saying she experienced racism and transferred out to Glasgow her tiktok is @dear.zig .Honestly I think it’s a hit or miss, it’s like all unis really, you shouldn’t let things discourage you, if you liked it there and you wouldn’t mind being there then go there.

Thank You. Where are you thinking of going?

I firmed Exeter 😭 York is my insurance (worse decision because they require same entry) I’m prepared to go through clearing if I don’t get the grades. Wby? Do you have an idea on where you’ll go?

Also are u on any exeter group chats?

I am between firming QMUL or Exeter. My Exeter offer is lower which makes it more likely to be my insurance. I am currently in one of the group chats on snapchat but it is pretty quiet, I was in another one but left as it was slightly chaotic and kinda weird.

hey, i recently spoke to one of the members of the Exeter Africa team, and from what he told me it is a very inclusive community who are actively looking to expand its ethnic representation! there are also a lot of societies and groups catered towards people of color according to the Students union website. Goodluck!

They are anon so unlikely to see your post.

There is a huge INTO centre on campus and check out the societies as @luumix says.

Hi to those in this thread,

Exeter has an incredibly diverse student body, with over 7,500 international students coming from around 150 countries. As a result, there a multitude of people of different demographics, so it is very easy to fit in.

There are many societies related to culture and identity on campus. Here, you can meet many like-minded or similar people, so you can start to feel like a part of a community. You can get a gist as to what groups you can connect with here: https://my.exeterguild.com/ . If you don't find what you need, you could even make your own society - this is quite common, and a few new societies usually crop up each year.

The staff and students are all super nice. You will meet people from all walks of life, and you won't feel like you don't fit in. It all depends on who you surround yourself with, and there are many people to choose from!
