Durham University Colleges

I have an offer to study music at Durham, I don't want to be too far away from music facilities and hub - would love a college with practice rooms etc - sociable but also a place to escape - a pretty view would be nice - any advice thoughts appreciated

Make sure you decide on what accomodation type you want (catered or self catered) because most colleges only offer one option and there are significant price differences. There’s a page on the website for accomodation prices.

I’m doing music too! I Initally just ranked all the colleges as close as they were to the department but then I found out that only St Cuthbert’s has self catered and choral scholarships. There’s also a college guide too and the offer holder open day has the opportunity to see 3 colleges.

Hi there

Congratulations on your offer!

The music department is located on Palace Green which is near the bailey colleges, so they would be your best bet if you want a college that's close to your department. All colleges have social spaces, a bar, gym, library etc so you will have enough places to unwind after a long day. Plus there's always the riverside where walks are very relaxing and it's close to the bailey as well!

This includes Cuths, Castle, Hatfield, St Johns and St Chads. St Marys is a hill college but is also fairly close to Palace Green if you take the shorter route. Most of these colleges are catered, except Cuths which is both catered and self-catered.

All of these colleges have music facilities- you can read details here- Chads; Castle; St Johns; Cuths although this is only available in their self-catered block (Parsons Field); Marys. From what I understand, Castle and St Johns have the best music facilities out of all these, although I haven't seen any of them in person so take my statement with a grain of salt!
