Manchester or Sheffield?

I really can’t decide which uni to choose between Manchester or Sheffield. I already have my offers (Meng General Engineering at Sheffield, Meng Aerospace Engineering with year in industry for Manchester).

Both are similar and are good for engineering, but I just can’t find anything to split them. I need your help to help me decide because I want to have a good look at accommodation before all the good places are gone!

the engineering building at manchester is fancy af, that's my contribution 😂
no in all honesty i do a humanities degree at Manchester so can't be much use for the actual course, but i go to the engineering buildings all the time and their facilities are insane, and there's always internships and careers events being advertised as well

only thing i would say is that accomodation at manchester is sooo expensive so worth taking a look at

if you have any other questions do let me know

I chose Sheffield but one main reason is I live Manchester and grown up here. But I chose Sheffield over Bath Bristol UCL etc.
Manchester is definitely the better city, university wise its very equal with Sheffields Diamond building being amazing. It really is based on what course u would rather do Sheffield probably has the greater variety in Modules (Mechanical wise) id also look into what most students did after graduation that helped me.

Hi andy.yy,
My name is Sofia and I am a 3rd Year Biochemistry student at the university of Sheffield. Therefore, I can't directly comment on engineering. However, I can share my experiences of being a Sheffield student. I originally chose Sheffield as I visited an open day and loved the friendly atmosphere and how passionate my lecturers were about what they were going to teach us. I also loved the many green spaces such as Endcliffe Park, Weston Park and the Peak District, with hiking being a good break from your studies. There's lots of things to do in Sheffield, with lots of lovely cafes/bars/shops etc. but I also love that it still maintains a relatively relaxed town-like atmosphere.

Like you said both are great, well-respected universities, so it will just be up to you to see which one you think would suit you personally!
I wish you all the best with your university journey,
Sofia 🙂

Hi! I went to Manchester uni and the engineering building there is super (give it a google!)
The city is really cool to live in and multicultural, and there's so much to do! Very rainy, but good transport links and the accom is good!

I chose sheffield over Manchester, both cities but very different! I found sheffield was greener (right by peak district) and manchester reminded me more of london. Also sheffield accom is pretty affordable, not sure about manchester. I’m biased but the student union at Sheffield is so good too.
Wish you luck!

Depends on which degree you prefer but Manchester is a better city IMO. Have you visited both?

I think the first thing to say is that there's no bad choice here! Both are really great unis and great cities too! I went to Manchester and loved it, the engineering building is great, as you say, and the accom is good too depending on where you go, as is the case for any uni!
