Lancaster accommodation & colleges

heya, i went to the offer holder day for Lancaster earlier this month and I was just wondering if anyone could answer any question 4 me about the uni.

I've heard that every college has a stereotype and I'm considering applying for bowland or county college (ik it is quite early), I was just wondering what is the stereotypes of these colleges and if anyone has any experience of being in these colleges what is it like?

I'm also considering applying for shared bathroom accom & on the offer holder day we saw a single bedroom with a washbasin in the room in bowland ash, does anyone know what the exact price of a room like that would be (one with specifically a washbasin in ur room)?

also, I'm considering applying for a same sex flat (cos my parents want me to), but I've seen at some unis that you can't have same sex if you go for the shared bathroom, does that apply at Lancaster? also, ik that with same sex flats no one of the opposite gender would be allowed in the flat but does that also apply to opposite gender parents if that makes any sense lol

lastly, I just wanted to know if lancaster allows students to have minifridges in their room or anything of that sort.

apologies for that many questions & thanks in advance to the person that answers any of them xxx

Hi Anon,

Congratulations on your offer!

Some of the colleges can have a stereotype but to be honest I think it is often based on the theme of their college bar and I’m not sure what the stereotype would be for bowland nor county if I’m honest. Fylde has a sports bar and is often seen as sporty, and grizedale has a cocktail so is often seen as a bit of a party college. Maybe someone who’s from county or bowland can give you a better idea. I was in furness and I’m now in grad college. County is one of the largest colleges and bowland is one of the founding colleges. County is in north campus whilst bowland is very central.

I found this on the website “Rooms in cluster flats also have a washbasin with a mirror above, but those in the townhouse-style blocks do not. Instead, there will be one in the adjacent shower rooms, which are provided at a ratio of one for every two rooms.” So it would seem that most flats that aren’t townhouses will have a washbasin. However, if you’re in a townhouse the bathroom is often right outside your room and only shared with one other so I don’t see this being a problem. https://www.lancaster.ac.uk/accommodation/undergraduate/bedrooms-with-shared-bathrooms/#whats-included-in-the-bedrooms-552736-4

On the same webpage it says “Bedrooms with shared bathrooms start from £129.71 per week, though most of these rooms are priced at £139.58 per week. Rooms in cluster flats that incorporate lounge areas in Bowland ASH, County Main and Furness Main cost £157.29 per week, while rooms in the townhouse-style blocks in County and Grizedale cost £172.13 per week.
All are let on a 40 week contract.” So ash house would be £157.29 a week. However, if you went for a flat with just a kitchen and no lounge area it would likely be cheaper around £139.58 per week.

I’m not sure about your questions about the same sex flats. I’d recommend you email [email protected]. I’m sure the team there will have an idea.

You won’t be allowed to have a mini fridge in your room as described in the electrical safety section of the Lancaster residents handbook “Refrigerators and freezers may not be kept in study bedrooms. If you need one for medical purposes, speak to your Accommodation Manager to obtain permission. If an item that is deemed to be dangerous is discovered in the accommodation, it will be removed by the Accommodation Manager, Porter or Technician, who will then contact you about it.” https://www.lancaster.ac.uk/accommodation/residents-handbook/fire-safety/#electrical-safety-494942-5

I hope I’ve covered everything! Let us know if you have any further questions.

I think all the rooms without an ensuite have a sink in the room (standard but not townhouses)!

Hi Anon,

I checked with the accommodation team for you. Single gender flats can be ensuite or shared bathroom. If you are part of a single gender flat you cannot have visitors of the opposite sex stay however, it would be okay for people of the opposite gender to help you move in on arrivals day.

Hope this helps!
