MA Korean Studies and Intensive Language at SOAS

I'll be starting at SOAS this September to study MA Korean Studies and Intensive Language! I wanted to know what student life is like, mainly as a postgrad and making friends in mid-late 20s (I'm 25 but will be 26 when the course starts). I won't be living in student accommodation so it may be more difficult to meet people as a result.
As well as more general things about SOAS, I'd also be interested in knowing more about the Japan and Korea department, or whole East Asian section more specifically, for example, which modules are interesting, etc. so if anyone studies or has studied in that department please let me know!
Is anyone else starting at SOAS as a postgrad this September? If so, what are you planning to study?

Hi! I started my undergrad a bit later so am 25/26 now in my final year at SOAS and have never lived in university accommodation. The perk of SOAS being a small University means its pretty easy to make friends, the class sizes are small and you see the same people in the library everyday. In my experience, SOAS students are very friendly! Also follow the Student Union Instagram as there are Postgrad specific meet and greet events throughout Welcome Week.

Hi - I'm thinking of applying for Korean Studies and Intensive Language for 2025! How are you finding the course so far? How was the choice of modules? There isn't much information on the website about the content of the course so it's hard to tell what a normal week might look like...Did you find it easy to write your personal statement?
Hello,

I would recommend contacting some students on Unibuddies for an insight on your course-related questions. There is also a tab to contact staff where you could request to talk to a student from the department.

I hope this helps 🙂
