Clearing 2024- Queen Mary/ City Uni of London

Hi there,

I was wondering if anyone knows if it's possible to get into a Econ/Accounting course at QMUL or City Uni through clearing with a BBC?

Thanks,
Hi there,

Thanks,

Does "a Econ/Accounting course" refer to a specific course or to any course in the general area of economics or accounting?

Last year, the following had some availability via Clearing;

Economics
Economics and Finance
Economics and International Finance
Economics and International Relations
Economics and Politics
Economics, Finance and Management
Economics, Statistics and Mathematics

Are you a UK or International student? (Some will only have been available to international students via Clearing).

However, I can see from the Government's DiscoverUni web site that 0% of 105 Economics entrants in 2021-22 attained between 112 and 127 UCAS points. (BBC is 112 points; ABB is 128 points). You can see these data here, plus data for other similar courses. That means that ABB is as low as they went for that course that year.

Hi,

Thanks for your response.

I was referring to Econ/ accounting in general.

I am a UK student.

So it's highly unlikely I can get into QMUL?
If not what about City?

For Economics with Accounting, City are only asking for BBB anyway (source) which obviously significantly increases your chances.

According to the this page on DiscoverUni, of 100 Economics with Accounting entrants to City in 2021-22, 41% were in the 112 and 127 UCAS points bracket (which could mean BBC or BBB). More interesting is the fact that 27% of entrants were in a lower UCAS points category so below BBC.

According to The Uni Guide (using April 2022 data from the Higher Education Statistics Agency - HESA), for that same course, the "Most popular A-Levels studied (and grade achieved)" were "Economics B | Mathematics C | Business Studies B".

So grade-wise, BBC is likely to be fine for City. (source) However, I don't know which courses City had available in Clearing last year (and that might not actually be any indication of which they'll have available in Clearing this year anyway.)

Ok so will I be able to do a 3 year course at City or is there a possibility I will need to do a foundation year also. I'm trying to avoid foundation year

Thanks,

You'll likely be fine for the three-year course. But as you (apparently) haven't actually applied there yet, and are relying on it being in Clearing, there might not be any places available by then anyway.

Have applied to any unis yet? Do you have any offers?

Nope unfortunately I haven't applied this was a very last min decision to go uni 😅 so no offers yet

Given that I asked "Have applied to any unis yet?", and you replied "Nope" I'm going to assume that you haven't just answered my question with regards to City.

That being the case, the whole premise of this thread is wrong, as you're asking about Clearing. Clearing won't open until July. Between now any then, many places which you could apply to (at City and elsewhere) will be filled. So don't wait until Clearing opens - but apply now.

Hey, you seem quite knowledgeable about this. I've applied to Qmul with achieved grades of ABB in biology chemistry maths, one B is in maths, and I am yet to receive a decision.

Do you know how likely it is I get in with these grades? Im just wondering as i feel like there's a huge chance i wont get in

I don't have any particular insight here, I'm afraid. Given that they're asking for AAA I'd have thought an offer with ABB achieved grades was unlikely, but the fact that they haven't responded yet might suggest that there's still a chance. (If it was a definite "no" they would have responded already.)

Hi as you seem quite knowldgeable,
Do you know if qmul had any clearing options in accounting and finance (not economics) or business. I know i will meet the AAA but I didn't apply on UCAS because I did not want to stay in london until recently, i have an offer from city for econ but i heard the university matters more.

Also with clearing, is there a particular time you call on the 15th once i've received my grades. Thanks

Universities tend not to publicise which courses went into Clearing in previous years, and although UCAS do provide this data (sort of) they don't do so per course. They only do so for each subject group (according to HECoS - the Higher Education Classification of Subjects). Fortunately, although both Accounting and Finance and Business are within CAH17 Business and Management, Economics (which you weren't interest in) is in CAH15 Social Sciences. But keep in mind that the details below cover all subjects within "Business and Management" generally, not just Accounting and Finance or Business.

QMUL accepted 775 candidates into a course within the "Business and Management" subject group last year. Of these, 120 had applied either via Extra or Clearing. That the most detail I can provide, I'm afraid. (It's worth noting that 45 of those 120 Extra/Clearing candidates were international.)

You can have a play with the data at https://www.ucas.com/data-and-analysis/undergraduate-statistics-and-reports/ucas-undergraduate-end-cycle-data-resources-2023 (although it's a bit fiddly):

UCAS End of Cycle Data - Queen Mary University of London - Number of accepted applicants - Not m.jpg

As for the timing for Clearing, you can call as soon as you know your grades. Note that logging into UCAS at 8:00 (or whenever it'll open this year) won't tell you your grades - it'll just tell you whether your were accepted by your firm or insurance choice. For your grades, you'll need to get them from your school/college - almost certainly in person.

hi do you know if there are usually clearing spaces in computer science at queen mary? thank you!

If you scroll up to the post directly above yours you'll see a screenshot with a UCAS logo top right showing the number of applicants who were accepted to Queen Mary were not "main scheme" applicants (meaning they applied via Extra or Clearing).

The main table (bottom left, with black headings) shows that for the "computing" subject group (second row) there were 20 such accepted applicants last year. The year before that there were 5, and the year before that there were 10 (these numbers are always rounded to a multiple of 5). So that's about 35 applicants, or about 12 per year across the last three years. Note that this is for any computing-related course, which could be Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Cyber Security etc. etc.

I don't have any more detailed information.
Hiya, to make this quick is it possible to get into QMUL for Law through clearing with CCC worst case scenario and BBC best case scenario.Or is that a bit too ambitious?

With grades CCC for Law at qmul it should be practically impossible, and with BBC either almost impossible or impossible.

UCAS data also shows that AAB is generally the lowest accepted, maybe ABB could be accepted but I dont know that.

Hi, you have a lot of knowledge about clearing so I would like to ask a question. I received grades BBC, with B in maths and history and C in physics. Do you think I have to chance to get into Maths at queen Mary through clearing? Thank you.

Yes, I'd say you have a chance - if it enters Clearing.

However, relying on Clearing is dangerous and I don't see why you wouldn't simply apply as one of your main five choices - even with those grades.

According to the data published by UCAS, in recent years Queen Mary has made offers to "1 in 1" - i.e. all - applicants to their Mathematics BSc (Hons) course. See the "Historical entry grades data" section of this page.

Furthermore, of those who received offers (i.e. all applicants), on results day they accepted 100% of those who achieved grades BBC or above.

Two caveats:
1. What's happened in the recent past won't necessarily be repeated in the future.
2. UCAS remove the top and bottom 5% of students before compiling this data, to avoid statistical anomalies throwing-off the trends / averages. So "all" doesn't necessarily literally mean "all".

Thank you so much for all the help. I did apply through ucas but I got rejected as my grades were too low. Do you think if I resit maths this year I would have a higher chance of being accepted through clearing?

I do, yes. You may even get in through Clearing with your existing grades, assuming the course enters Clearing. However, retaking Maths (or Physics, in which you have a C) can only improve your chances.
