How easy is it actually to get a job in computer science as a girl?

Just wondering. I want to persue computer science into further studies but I don’t know if the job prospect for women is that high. Do they just want to employ men?

no they don't just employ men- there are some great women in the industry and with CS i think it depends on skills and experience. if you have a great coding portfolio than a man who doesn't- who are they going to hirer realistically?

Hi!

A little off-topic but I know when was looking into going into Computer Science as a degree I was a little worried I might be one of the only girls on my course. However, that wasn't the case! We're not dominating the space yet at all but I'd say there are around 6 other girls on my course and the number keeps rising every year.

Another great thing is that most universities including Heriot-Watt have women in computer science societies which tend to create great spaces to meet other people interested in the same thing as you but also bring in industry professionals to give talks and really encourage us to keep involved with the discipline.

Another thing I've found is that even if the number of other girls on the course isn't very high they're all really supportive and friendly. I've honestly loved my experience so far!

Sorry, not an answer to you're question but I'm hoping it might be a little helpful! I'm currently finishing my second year so no experience of the job market yet but from what I've heard they don't have a preference at all, it's all about your skills and experience. If you have any more questions please feel free to ask 🙂

Hey there,

It's great to hear that you're considering pursuing computer science into further studies! While historically male-dominated, the tech industry is gradually becoming more diverse and inclusive, with increasing opportunities for women in various roles.

Employers in the tech sector are increasingly recognizing the value of diversity and actively seeking to create more inclusive workplaces. Many organizations have initiatives in place to attract and retain female talent, including mentorship programs, diversity and inclusion initiatives, and outreach efforts aimed at encouraging women to pursue careers in tech.

While challenges may still exist, such as gender bias and stereotypes, there are numerous success stories of women thriving in computer science careers, from software engineering to data analysis, cybersecurity, and beyond. By pursuing your passion for computer science and leveraging your skills and qualifications, you can position yourself as a competitive candidate in the job market.

At Salford we have the Go Beyond program that provides mentoring to women who want to succeed in the STEM field. I recommend looking into something similar at other universities.

Remember to seek out supportive communities, networks, and resources to help navigate your career path and overcome any barriers you may encounter along the way. With determination, perseverance, and a strong skillset, you can carve out a rewarding and fulfilling career in computer science, regardless of gender.

Best Regards,
