MSc Speech and Language - Sheffield vs Leeds Beckett?

Hello everyone,

I hope you’re all doing well and enjoying the lighter days!

I was hoping to get some insight into 2 SLT masters courses. I’m trying to make a decision and would really appreciate hearing some people’s experiences (the good and the bad)!

I am looking at the MMedSc at the University of Sheffield and the MSc at Leeds Beckett University.

I have a few questions but would love any insight (about living, societies etc.) that people can give!

1. How medical/science orientated is the course at Sheffield? I love the sound of the university but worry about how intense the medical focus will be?
2. How many people were on your course?
3. I understand that any SLT masters is incredibly intense but how was the experience at the uni? I saw that Sheffield had more modules and placement hours and was curious about how people managed this?

Thank you so much and I really appreciate any help with this ☺️❤️

If you don't get any replies on TSR, have a look at the uni websites to see if they offer a 'Chat with a current student' option on the course page.

Hey. As a student at the University of Leeds and being familiar with Leeds Becket, I can tell you that Sheffield is a better place reputation wise. I am a Law student and cannot answer your questions (sorry). But I would advise to choose Sheffield.

Hi,

I am in my 3rd year of an undergraduate degree at the University of Sheffield. Whilst I can't tell you about the course, I can tell you about studying in Sheffield. I have really enjoyed living here, the city has lots of green spaces such as the botanical gardens and Weston park. These are really nice to meet up with a friend or just to spend some time outside especially during the summer exam period. There are 4 libraries, 2 of which (The Diamond and IC) are open 24 hours so if you ever need a late night revising or completing an assignment, there's somewhere you can be to do that.
The university has over 300 societies, with a massive range of music, dance, sport, hobbies, as well as volunteering opportunities. There are also give it a go's that enable you to have a taster session before joining the society so you can try lots of things without committing to a membership.
If you have any questions about the course you can use the chat to us function to speak to current students: https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/study/chat
Have you attended any open days? These are a great chance to see the uni and get a feel for the city as well as meeting your department and talking to lots of people.

Hope this is helpful, please let me know if you have more questions,
Lizzie (BSc Mathematics and Philosophy - University of Sheffield)

Hiya

I went to Leeds Beckett and did the MSc. There were 25 on our course.
Be prepared for lots of hard work -we had exams and coursework constantly on the go, I'm not sure I was prepared for how difficult it would be compared to undergrad (I did linguistics). but i'm sure you'll be fine, just got to be organised and believe in yourself!!

I actually turned down my interview for Sheffield partly because I was concerned it would have more of a medical / research focus where those aren't my strong points. At Leeds we did have to study anatomy of the head and neck, neuroanatomy (of the brain) and dysphagia (swallowing) module. So yes there are definite medical aspects to the course. However, the course at Leeds was quite holistic, we studied lots of different topics from linguistics to phonetics to education to anatomy to counselling techniques. A major strength of the Leeds programme is we did a module in applied psychology, where we studied different types of counselling techniques to use with our clients. We were told very few other places offer this type of training (or it would be something you'd access as part of CPD once qualified) and it was very useful. We covered counselling techniques like solution focussed brief therapy, CBT approaches to be used with our clients. We then role-played using the techniques with actors and gained feedback on our skills. It was very useful and really good experience for clinical practice. The teaching was quite comprehensive too.

Another strength of the Leeds programme is the course team - who really are wonderful and amazing. I'm biased but I say you should choose leeds beckett even if it's just for this - on a course like SALT you really do need good support!

Good luck 🙂

I can counter this with the MSc Occupational Therapy (pre-reg) course I’m studying at LBU. I don’t believe I received much support from lecturers and staff when it came down to MH. Personally I’d recommend looking at the university and teaching methods as a whole. I’m considering switching out of this course and moving to SLT. But I have to say, they are very disorganised, this isn’t coming from just me, but the rest of my peers too. We were given an exam without much prep, or time. There are limited resources to access too.
