Where are good places to look for part-time jobs whilst at uni?

I'm starting my Masters at University of Lincoln in September, and will be renting so need to find a stable part-time job whilst I'm studying. I'm worried about work getting in the way of my studies so I want something fairly easy-going (aka not retail). Could anyone recommend any good jobs that fit around studies?

Hello!

From my experience actually working for the university is usually a good way to earn money. They obviously understand about deadlines and are usually flexible around your timetable. For example, I am a student ambassador which I very much enjoy but I have friends that work for the shops or bars on campus!

Hope this helps,

if it's your first job, id advise looking at local independent businesses like cafes/restaurants as they'll want weekend staff and usually won't mind if you didn't have experience but id get on indeed and see what's around your area

I still say Argos if you can get a job there- reasonable pay and really chilled work environment- you can even go on your phone when work is quiet! They allow any amount of hours from about 12 and they’re really flexible. Have a look to see if there’s a store near you - maybe in a Sainsbury’s?

Hiya!

It’s great to hear that you are looking for a job - I think it is great to get a part time job as a student, as you get to gain some experience, add more to your CV and earn some extra money on the side. All of this is ideal as long as you can also find a job that is accommodating to the student lifestyle i.e not too many hours and / or late nights.

As already mentioned, I would recommend getting in contact with your Career’s Team at the university and looking at the university website for student jobs. By speaking to the career's team they can inform you on any jobs within the university and possibly what's available in the area. For example, at De Montfort University we have Student Ambassador jobs (which is one of my part time jobs) and this role is incredibly flexible, optional, easy going and enjoyable as I have had some incredible opportunities presented to me through this role. I have also recently applied for a Front runner position, which is again a student job at the university with a specific team - so there are different options out there, however the amount of hours may not be guaranteed each week as they are usually zero hour contracts but definitely worth having a look at!

I would also recommend looking at some websites such as Indeed, LinkedIn, Unitemps and even Facebook.

As you have possibly moved to a new city for your Masters, I would suggest walking around with copies of CV to see if you can leave it anywhere or if anywhere is hiring because even if there is no part time work currently available there may be some soon or even temporary seasonal work. This may seem quite intimidating but the worse they can say is no, and I am sure they can relate to a time when they were looking for work.

From my friends experiences as students some of them don't work, some work in retail / food establishments, some work in their field of degree gaining experience and some just work seasonally. Why not also, ask around at university to your friends and peers perhaps they know of some work available.

I hope this helps, and best of luck!

Hi there,

I'm going to second what some people have said already and say that working for your University is a good idea.
I have a job as a student ambassador and it's good because as you are working for your uni, they want you to attend all of your academic commitments and say that attending uni and ensuring assignments are done is a priority.
I've also found it good because you can say yes or no to any amount of shifts that you can- usually a shift is sent out to everyone and if you can do it you say yes but there isn't any pressure to do so. There is also sometimes evening or weekend work if there are open days on which is good as it doesn't affect your uni lectures.

There are also usually other campus jobs that you could do- working in the student bars, shops, student union etc. I've also seen things before for course reps and other jobs like this so it's worth having a look at your university jobs page as you will likely find something on here.

The downside with this job, though, is that they are usually zero hours so you aren't guaranteed a set number of hours and sometimes there is more work opportunities than other times of the year so it just depends on how busy the uni is and what time of year it is- e.g. some times there will be more open days than others. If you wanted more guaranteed hours, a job in a restaurant or bar may be good as they can often be evening work and you can specify that you can only do a set hours of work a week so it doesn't get too overwhelming.
As others have said, walking around with your CV is a good idea too and you can go into places that you think will be a good fit for you and offer them your CV. There's no harm in asking!

I hope some of this helps,

Hi there,

Firstly, the student reps above have given you a lot of useful advice and what they have said is very valuable. I'd also like to add something that you can actively contact some of the university's careers teams and teachers because sometimes they will offer some teaching assistant positions (but I'm not sure if they'll be available to postgraduates, you can check with those people).
In addition to the regular sites like LinkedIn and indeed, I would also highly recommend looking up employment websites like creative access, BoF Careers, the stage, etc. but the problem with these sites is that there are fewer opportunities outside of London. Just do a Google search: place name + part time job. is also a good way to know.
I hope my advice can help you.

Hi Anon,
Maybe see if the university can offer any help with looking for part time jobs, as local businesses might advertise job opportunities within the students union. Alternatively, see if there's any jobs working for the uni in maybe a cafe or bar, as they tend to be quite understanding with fitting a job around your studies.
Hope this helps!

Hello,

My name is Haya and I am a final year medical student. Throughout my medical school training, I worked different part time jobs.

1.

University jobs: I love working university because most jobs are zero hour contract jobs and they understand that course work comes first. The way I found these jobs was on the university website and a platform called Handshake.

2.

The other way I found one of my part time job (an out of hours call centre) was a flyer in one of our most famous student restaurants so I would say ask around and ask your peers.

3.

Finally, websites like LinkedIn and Indeed can also be helpful.

What type of job are you looking for?

Best wishes,
Haya - MBBS V

Hi Haya!

Thanks for the advice, I think I'll definitely ask my university once I get there and see if there's anything going.
As for what kinds of job, I don't really mind as long as it's not too much physical work or really long shifts. I have some experience working in a supermarket but ideally wouldn't do that again. I also have a lot of experience working with dogs so think I might try look for something in a dog day care or with a dog walking business. Currently I do Rover dog walking part-time but it doesn't pay enough for me to live on :frown:

Hi Anon,

Have you enquired at your University whether they have part-time roles available? This is always a great way to gain experience as well as being in a familiar environment. Many universities offer Ambassador roles, which allow Students to have a job alongside studies, and this can vary from each University.

I'd definitely recommend enquiring to your Careers Services on Campus as it can be great to add to your CV. Also, as we know from studying, no two days are the same. So, getting a job on campus might be a fun but interesting change!

Hope this was of help!

Hi
I would say besides your standard service jobs such as working in restaurants, coffee shops or supermarkets, you could also try working part time for your Uni. The student ambassador role for example is really interesting and a great opportunity to not only earn money but also get to know your university really well. Or you could be involved in a paid mentor scheme or work for your Students Union.
These are just some of the options, but I would definitely say that having a part time job will always leave you with time for focusing on your studies, so you have nothing to worry about.

All the best
