Student maintenance and tennancy

Hi there,

Applying for student maintenance next year but am staying in a flat with my family on the tenancy and can't get my name on, the gov student maintenance website says nothing about asking for the tenancy to get maintenance but I've seen a few places say you need to provide it to get the first payment, can anyone currently in accom or independent housing let me know if they've been asked for a tenancy or housing agreement? Thank youu

You just need to say that you will be living at home with parents when you apply. Your first payment is released when you enrol at uni and your uni confirms you attendance to SFE.

Does this not change the amount of money you would get for your maintenance as I will be having to pay my share of the rent/ the same amount as I would if I moved out

Living at home only entitles you to the reduced rate of maintenance loan. You would have to contact SFE and I expect you would have to supply evidence that you pay rent to get the higher amount (if it is possible).

Hi,

You will be classed as living at home, even though you pay rent towards the tenancy.

You could contact SFE but you would have to supply a significant amount of evidence that would prove that you are contributing towards the rent. Even then I’m not too sure that they would change your maintance loan to be in align with what you would receive if you were classed as living away from home.

You can always see if your university has any bursary’s or scholarships available for students. These are not usually means tested like SFE but have a separate eligibility criteria.

I hope this helps! Good luck
