PSYCHOLOGY at DMU: 4 reasons why

Hey there

Are you ready to dive into the fascinating world of human behaviour and the mind? Psychology offers an exciting journey of self-discovery and personal growth.

Now, it is not an easy task to find the perfect university that will unlock your potential and pave the way for your dream career. To make the best decision, it is essential to thoroughly research and explore universities that catch your interest.

Let me share why I would enthusiastically choose De Montfort University once again and give you a glimpse into what the Psychology course here has to offer.

1. Education 2030

DMU has introduced an innovative and student-friendly teaching approach known as block teaching, aiming to make your learning journey smoother. Here is the scoop: You will focus on one or two subjects at a time for the duration of a block, with regular assessments at each block's end no cramming for year-end exams! Moreover, your straightforward timetable will ensure you can fully engage with your subjects while making the most of your university life.

Psychology at DMU, being a scientific discipline, blends theory with hands-on practice, making it both captivating and enriching. Notably, it not only imparts essential knowledge but also cultivates a diverse set of transferable skills. How does it unfold?

Alongside traditional lectures, learning takes shape through interactive seminars, practical workshops utilizing psychological software, and tutorials featuring demonstrations with equipment. One standout experience for me was a Biological practical session where we had the opportunity to engage with EEG equipment firsthand.

2. Outstanding student support

Imagining the transition to university can be challenging, potentially leading to unnecessary stress. That is why it is crucial to carefully and thoroughly consider the support provided by universities when making your choice.

With DMU backing you every step of the way, you can rest assured that the transition and university experience will not be a source of excessive worry and that you will join an inclusive and supportive community. Read my recent post to discover a wealth of support waiting for you.

My personal favourite, careers support, has provided me with invaluable assistance in figuring out my professional strengths and interests, and gaining practical experience. During my first year of studies, I secured my first psychological internship. Following that, I embarked on a Global Psychology Internship with the Think Pacific organisation, where I designed mental health workshops to support Fijian society. And this summer, I am set to begin another internship with a mental health support company in Leicester.

DMU is dedicated to enhancing our employability through a wealth of opportunities, including careers fairs, internship schemes, placement years, professional and skills development training, one-to-one coaching sessions, webinars, enterprise support, and online resources.

3. Endless extracurricular activities

Whether you have a hobby, a wild passion, a desire to explore the world, a longing to volunteer, or a wish to enhance your employability through an intriguing course, DMU has got you covered. And the best part? Most of these opportunities will not break the bank account, as they are either free or partially funded.

No matter your aspirations, DMU is the place where you can bring them to life. And to assure you it is not just talking, let me share my own journey over the past two years: I have taken a Spanish language course, completed the Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) course, embarked on two academic trips to Bilbao and Alicante, and this academic year, I am in Bilbao for a student exchange.

4. Leicester: affordable and student-friendly

While some may argue that finances should not sway our decisions, let's face it - many of us have budget constraints that we cannot ignore. Personally, I was taken aback by how quickly expenses added up in the UK and how important finding a job became.

That is why I aimed to settle in a student-friendly city, and Leicester exceeded my expectations. Not only is it brimming with youthful energy and a wealth of entertainment options for our leisure, but it is also consistently ranked as one of the most affordable cities, making life here more fulfilling and manageable.

With accommodations available for as low as £90 per week, you will have plenty left over to indulge in your passions or anything else. For me, that means jetting off to explore the world at least once every two months.

I hope it was helpful 💪 Feel free to reach out if you have any questions 😉 You can chat with me or other DMU students via The Ambassador Platform. We are more than happy to share our experiences and insights there with you.

Take care,
