The Student Room Group

extra time A levels

is it currently too late to be awarded extra time? basically i qualified for 25% extra and was given it at gcse mocks but at the time i didn’t want it bc i was like embarrassed and they had me in a separate room as arrangements too & also didn’t feel i acc needed it for gcses etc
ik i should’ve just accepted it then
but they took it off after that as i requested , and now i’m looking to ask for it coz i feel i would benefit from it in a levels but idk if it’s too late
i’ve emailed my head of sixth form but haven’t got a response after over a week too so idk , is it something they can add easily since i’ve had it before or? if anyone has any experience

Hey, I requested to apply for extra time at the beginning of March. I spoke directly to the person in charge of it rather than my head of 6th form. Originally I was told it’s too late into the process because I’m pretty sure they had already entered us for our exams, so they told me I can probably apply to get rest breaks instead. I wasn’t too happy so I spoke with my friends and it turns out one of them had asked her history teacher for extra time like 2 days prior to me asking, she wasn’t updated about the fact we could only get rest breaks but when I told her that that’s what the teacher in charge had told me she said she was going to speak with her mum and see if she can talk to the teacher and do something about it. Later on that day I got an email from the teacher telling me that I’m going to do a test at some point next week to see if I qualify, on top of already having evidence from my Bio and Chem mock papers I had done where I used a different coloured pen to show me using ‘extra time’. The test we had to do was pretty self explanatory, fill in the gaps with the words given, decode this phrase, write about yourself… the standard test everyone does when they want to apply for extra time, I believe anyway. It took like half an hour so it wasn’t anything bad. Few hours later, when I got home, I received an email saying I got the extra time and will have it in my exams.
It’s a really quick process and i got it within a week in March, however I’m not sure if you can apply for it now considering we’ve already been given exam timetable and arrangements are made —> unless your school hasn’t already done that. My biggest tip is going straight to the teacher in charge of extra time or to your exams office and seeing what they can do. Your head of 6th form might not be able to help you, or might not be bothered considering how late it is in the year - like mine lol. Definitely mention that you’ve already qualified before for your GCSEs as it might give you a boost —> maybe throw in any illnesses you may have - if you do, of course - since that will make them more lenient. Do it as soon as you can because even if you dont get extra time you might be able to get rest breaks which isn’t half bad and is definitely better than nothing!
Hope this helped a little!

thank you so much for this response, i really appreciate it!
yes my mum emailed the exams person who has previously emailed about access arrangements& extra time and is in charge of it and strangely she’s the one who forwarded us on to my head of year and was like she’ll sort it but nothing since that,
maybe i’ll ask her in person on monday
yes you’re right we have been sent timetables so it definitely could be too late i should’ve asked earlier - just on my schools part if that’s the case i feel like it’s better they just send an email back saying that rather than nothing
i’ll also ask about rest breaks if all else fails as i didn’t know that was a thing, tysm!!
i’m glad to hear yours all got sorted
