RAF Basic Training

My son has started his basic training, when does it stop being so hard for them 😢 hearing them on the call is so difficult. He is only 17 and it’s been a huge shock
When he starts his Phase 2 (Trade) training, which is more academic, and in his chosen role. Seriously.

It's military training; it's hard for a lot of people, no matter their age, but that's the point. The military ethos is warfighter first, job second, so they will push people physically and mentally to find the personalities they want, but that's not to say he won't have times in the future when he's working and he's tired, rubbish weather, lots to do, and that's when those first weeks carry across and you push through. It's a case of remembering that it's (potentially) only 10 weeks and eyes on the prize.

We have spoken to him today & he is feeling a lot better. I think it is just such a shock the the system but we told him they do it to make him a decent person out of him.

At the end of the 10 weeks, he will look back and say that he loved it.

Hi Claire,

How is your son getting on now?

My son is only 16 next month and has his medical in two weeks, so potentially starting at Halton in September if all goes well.
He wanted to do his apprenticeship in the RAF, which of course I am very proud of his choice. Still unsure how he will actually feel once there, and how many other recruits will be of similar age? Do you know if there are many younger ones in your son's intake?.

Many Thanks
Claire

Hi Claire,

After week 3 he was really settled, still get a few stresses with the exams but he over worries. First 3 weeks were hard as he was getting used to everything he had to do and the early mornings were hard.

If your son preps and get his fitness up then he will have nothing to worry about. Alfie got himself into a pt class and ran most days to keep fitness up.

He has a room of 8 and I think they oldest is 23? He gets on with all of them and they are all having a great time. The local leave helps, we went all for the first one but they are all planned out well with what they are doing.

We are very proud of him and cannot wait for graduation.

Xx
