Dinwiddy house safety

So the other day I applied for accommodation for SOAS and I got dinwiddy house but I’ve been looking online about the safety of the area and everything is saying it’s not safe and it’s got one of the highest crime rates in london. It’s kind of scared me haha so I was just wondering if anyone has lived/ is living there and had anything different to say (hopefully it was a bit exaggerated online and it’s not that bad). Thank you!!

Hi there, I understand that looking online might give some unsettling answers but hopefully I can dispel some worries. Dinwiddy House is located right by Kings Cross which is a super busy and touristic area of London. I can see how statistics would make this area seem unsafe due to the sheer number of people! Many SOAS students live at Dinwiddy, especially first years so there is a proper community there. London is a big city so its always good to be careful and avoid being out alone late at night but safety has not been an issue at Dinwiddy!Hope this has helped and feel free to reply or get in touch with a student via Unibuddy!

Lived there this year.
Near kings cross which is bless
Depending on your building you'll get more cleaners per week
If you're in building A, you're cooked because there's no cleaners
If you're receiving a 51 week contract its a scam
We had rats in our kitchen, took them 6 weeks to solve it
Our kitchen door broke, they asked us to pay for it, Not good
Decent to live, the Bed is hella uncomfy
Good things, The wifi is pretty good

That area is pretty safe, even if it's near Kings Cross. It's well policed and generally very busy 24/7. Coal Drops Yard redevelopment and fixing up the station improved that part of the city markedly. As far as the rest of the Old Smoke goes, I'd rather be there than many other places. Internet opinions like that are rubbish anyway.

You don't get to choose, if you're a SOAS student you might be able to. But non SOAS students just randomly into block E.

Hi there, I hope you're well.

As far as I am aware, you cannot, per se, choose which block you would end up living in at Dinwiddy, regardless of which university's student you are. There are other situations where you may have more freedom in choosing. Sanctuary Students, who are in charge of Dinwiddy, state on their website, and I quote:

"We’ll try and allocate you with like-minded people, but we can’t guarantee that we’ll always be able to share with someone specific. Let us know during your application or by getting in touch with us to let us know who you’d like to live with".

Furthermore, if you have any friends whom you want to share a flat with potentially, then you'll need to tell Sanctuary Students the names and contact details of the people you want to live with on your online application, and they will need to put your name and contact details on their application (this is subject to availability, of course). If you’re applying to live with us through your university, each person will need to contact the Sanctuary Students team, stating their name and the name/names of those they wish to share with.

Please feel free to contact Sanctuary Students directly to get any further clarification on this matter here: Contact Sanctuary Students.

Hope that helps 😄,
