Marketisation and selection sociology

On multiple resources it says that good schools are able to select what students that would most benefit them. I am confused as doesn’t every child have the right to a school in their area. Is this selection process just limited to people who move school mid year (mainly from exclusions as I know schools can deny people). Or can they select from when they apply in yr 6. Hope this makes sense as I’m just curious and confused

If good schools are oversubscribed then they can choose the best candidates such as students who got the highest in admission exams, best test results etc. A student does have a right to go to a school near to them, but the process of enrolment is slightly is different for selective schools vs comprehensive/mixed ability schools as they aim to have high attaining students in their schools.
