In what specialism? Biology is not a small subject.

I wouldn't say I have read a wide variety of books in biology, but I have looked into cancer, virology, biology at university level, and evolutionary biology. Currently also looking into biochemistry.

So many to choose from

If they have A-level biology then anything by Nick Lane should be accessible, and they are all good. Maybe start with Life Ascending: The Ten Great Inventions of Evolution.

Deadly Companions: How Microbes Shaped our History by Dorothy H. Crawford

What is Life?: How Chemistry Becomes Biology by Addy Pross.

If they've not read it then The Selfish Gene by Dawkins, but I can't imagine someone would get to A-level bio without having read this.

I've not read it yet, but Gene Machine: The Race to Decipher the Secrets of the Ribosome by Venki Ramakrishnan has been recommended to me and is on my list.

Siddhartha Mukherjee's books are exquisite, I'd start with The Emperor of All Maladies.

That should keep you going, I find as I read books like these they often reference more so the backlog builds up! I have at least a dozen on my shelf to read. A lot of the older ones can be found on Amazon for £2-£3 sometimes if you don't mind a second hand copy.
