Repeating a year

hey guys, i wanted to ask for advice here. I'm currently in year 13 (NI) and i'm doing BTEC business, ICT and applied science. i realised that problaly no uni will accept 3- BTECS, even tho i'm predicted Distinction in all my 3 subjects for the first year, and i could possibly get a D* in business.
however, there is so much sigma around repeating a year it's crazy. i would feel like i failed myself and my parents even tho they do not care if i repeat a year or not. also, i would have so much pride to swallow which I'm not sure i would able to do. I was thinking about waiting till results day and based on my results deciding what i should do.
Do you guys think it's worth repeating a year? or should i just do a foundation year in uni if i need to?

Wait till results day and opt for clearing, even the best unis have some places, also, never think about what anyone says, at the end of the day, it's going to be you who lives his life, and solves your own problems, do your best and I'm sure you're going to do amazing!

If clearing doesn't work out then I would say that repeating a year is just that, repeating a year. I completely agree with you about the stigma surrounding it, I'm repeating a year this year due to external circumstances last year that prevented me from doing exams and oh my god, I've felt so so out of place all year. I don't know them at all, and the looks, eekkk. But, I've learnt/tried to just suck it up, I'm doing what I can do for me and what I feel is best for me, so try to not think about what other people think if it comes to repeating. Otherwise, I hope everything goes okay with clearing, it seems like a stressful situation but I'm sure it'll work out! A foundation year is also a great choice as well, but it may mean reapplying to UCAS, do you have someone at school/college that you could talk about with regards to a foundation year?
Goodluck

ah i’m sorry to hear that it prevented you taking your exams :frown:. see i’m in north of ireland, so uear 13 here is year 12 for england. Currently i’m trying to suck it up as well. an uni saying they would accept 3 BTECS but, i’m not sure if i want to risk it just incase others have better competition. The other thing is, i’m not even sure what i wanna do in uni because it changes every few months… so i think i might suck it up and repeat as well. it’s just the FOMO that sso bad lol!!!

Ah, I didn't realise it was different. I'm in Wales, but it isn't any different from England. I would say it's probably a good option to repeat especially if you don't know what you want to do. Think of it this way, you can have the whole summer to really think about what you want to do and then repeat with things you feel happy to take! The fear of missing out is pretty strong, I'm really not going to lie, I literally don't even talk to my friends from last year anymore because we are on such different paths that it feels like we can't really relate to each other so that does really suck, but hopefully things will work out for the better for you darling and goodluck with exam season!

Hello, this can be a very stressful time. I finished High School with poorer grades than I wanted and ended up taking a gap year before applying for SOAS and getting onto their Humanities Foundation year course. I am now in my final year of BA Japanese and International Relations so it was all worth it. My advice would be to follow your heart, for me a foundation year was the best decision as I simply had to pass it to get onto my BA course, but in hindsight if I had repeated a year in High School I would have had more options early on. There is nothing wrong with repeating a year but also looking at foundation years or going through clearing are both good options too!
All the best with whatever you decide.

thank you haha! yeah definitely
,the FOMO is INSANE! i’m already sad about the fact that my year above friends are leaving me this year. i’m planning to leave the country for uni, either england or going even international overseas, but the fomo is rlly holding me back and makes me want to stay in Ireland. i will definitely think about it during summer and see. losing friends will be the end of me, even tho i’m rlly extroverted 🥲

Have you already applied to unis? If you have, and have been given offers, there’s no reason why they wouldn’t accept.
