Making friends as an introvert at university can feel daunting, but it's definitely possible and can be rewarding if you take the time and effort to step out from your comfort zone, even just slightly. Here are some tips for making friends in university as an introvert!
Find Friends with Similar Interest in a Society Joining a society can be a good way to make new friends when you first come to university. As an international student who didn't know anyone when I first came to Kingston, I joined a faith society which allowed me to meet new people from outside my course. It was a little challenging at first to break the ice but having a similar interest(being in the same society) made it easier to talk and warm up to other people over time. There is a society for everyone at Kingston, be it playing video and board games, crafts, sports, academic or a faith society, joining a society you are interested in is one of a few ways to make new friends in your first year of university.
Learning a New Language for Free! My first year of university also gave me the time and freedom to explore and learn a new language through the Kingston Language Scheme. Although it was slightly challenging juggling coursework while learning a new language, it was fun to interact with people in a small group outside your course. You have the option to take the class in-person or online which helps if you prefer meeting people through a screen from the comfort of your own home, thats what I did!
Extracurricular activities through KUExtra KUextra, a platform which allows you to check out all the different talks, events, sporting events and exhibitions organised by Kingston University! Although not for everyone, sometimes they have really interesting events such as Go-karting or webinars about freelancing that you may be interested in.
Aside from these options, you will naturally make a few friends living in student accommodation and through your course. Remember, many other students will also be looking to make new friends, so you're not alone in this experience. Take it step by step, and don't hesitate to reach out. Good luck with your journey at university!
