Studying in Australia as someone from the UK

Hi! I’’m currently in Year 12 (sixth form) and I would really like to study dentistry in Australia. However, as someone who’s from England, I’m confused whether I would fall into the 2025 or 2026 cohort for starting university - as i’m aware the academic year starts at a different time to England (Jan/Feb?). Also i’m born in January (I’m 17) so i’m even more confused! Please give me some advice on this! Thanks

Yeah so all my friends who ended up in Ausi all took a 6/7 month gap year before starting uni. They all left for uni in Feb and applied only after receiving their A level results.

Thank you so much for your comment! Do you know when your friends’ birthdays are? Since i’m born in Jan, if i were to take a 6 month gap year i’d basically be 19 when i start uni in Australia. Do you know whether that would that be a problem? Do I have to apply a year earlier? Australia’s school system confuses me!

Hi! I was just wondering when your friends submitted their applications for unis in Australia. I assume it was in August as that’s when A level results are out but aren’t uni application deadlines in Australia around July time? Or do international students have a more flexible deadline? Please let me know, thank you!! 🙂

So very sorry for the late reply I've lost track. So one was born 14/12/2005, the other 13/04/2005, and another 11/01/2004. And no it would not be a problem if you start at 19.

Thing is many of em applied for the February intake and the application period is between October and November. And yes they do have a deadline in July (I think that's specifically for the summer intake). It also depends on the uni. Most of my friends applied to UNSW, Usyd, Umelb, Adelaide, UWA, ANU etc etc.
