Going to sixth form

Hi I’m going to sixth form college this September and I’m a bit confused as to what I will need as I don’t want to waste money on something I might not need but also if you guys have any suggestions in what I should bring too I would happily listen as they may help me.

This subjects I’m going to be doing are Biology, Chemistry & Psychology.

For now I’ve got the normal essentials for my pencil case, Calendar book for my important dates like exams, scientific calculator and a wallet for my homework that needs to be done which will stay in my bag. Any advice on what else I might need from your opinion or anything I might have missed??

I don’t have 3 notebooks yet for my subjects because I’m not sure whether my subject teachers will provide them for me or not.

I haven’t gone for the usual Ring binders or Arch binders that everyone goes on about but really just because I’m planning on just using coloured tabs and colour coordinate my topics for each subject using the tabs on the paper and also this would make my life easier when looking back at notes later on. But what do you think about this, what’s your opinions??

Glad you’ve read all of this and any advice would be helpful 😄

Thanks 🙃

Always a really good idea to look at the school's website to check what they suggest what you get to take in, but im not sure if it's the same for all 6th forms, but all my lessons are primarily worksheets and pieces of paper given to us, so I would suggest getting maybe one ring binder to start to be prepared and you can buy more later! Just bring in what you think will be essential and you'll probably figure out what else you need pretty quick

Hope this helps!

i also do bio chem and psych and i’m in year13 rn. i used to have a “day folder” ring binder i would bring to school and i would have my notes for the current topic in my day folder and then i would transfer them to my other ring binders which i keep at home once i finish a topic. however i see a lot of people bring notebooks to school and just make notes there. but i would recommend a ring binder to keep at home so all your notes are in one place!

Hi, idk if you bring you own device to sixth form like I did, but I wish I stuck to one method of note taking. I bought a laptop for sixth form and I would write notes on paper and did the whole "day folder" method (stupidly). I kept up with taking my notes out and putting them in folders for the first few months and then gave up. I ended up having my maths, bio and chem notes all in one book and it was too confusing. Then I switched to typing my notes on my laptop, which was better because my teachers would send the notes online so I just had to highlight or add extra info, so I spent most of my time listening. But for bio and chem I'd recommend an iPad/tablet since it's easier to write wherever you want. I haven't done psych so idk what would work best, but if it consists a lot of writing then a laptop would be better for that lesson. Or you could get an iPad with an apple pencil and Bluetooth keyboard so you have 2 in 1 (doesn't have to be the apple brand you can find other brands on amazon for example). I think your method of using coloured tabs is great! The day folder method did my head in and my notes would be all over the place, some in the subject folders from the first few months, some crumpled up in my bag and some on my laptop. So figure out what works for you and stick to it otherwise when it comes to revision, you'll waste time writing up your notes so everything is in one place. Again, idk if you bring your own device but this might help others who do so i thought id still write this x

I second this!
so many people I know have heaps of papers and folders that they just do not use or keep in order.
my advice ( if you do not have an iPad/ laptop) is to go to the school library perhaps once a day or once a week and all the notes that you have made, you should type them up on a document. make sure to separate the subject and the topics. so when it does come to revision, you have good condensed notes that can be accessible anywhere. p.s I do the same subjects as you and this has helped me so much when revising for exams and tests. if you need any help, I can show you how I write my notes x
