Student Finance Over 25 with Part-time Previous Study

Hi all,

So after the revelation that I will actually be attending Uni this year (assuming I have passed some final exams), I have submitted my Student Finance Application. I'm of the understanding that previous part-time finance, as long as I didn't achieve any qualification, does not affect my SF allowance and I will receive the full 3 years (plus one gift year if required) loan. Is this correct?

Additionally, as I'm a self-supported (currently living with parents, but moving away from home to study) 25 year old, and will be almost 26 at the start of the course, I believe that the maintenance loan should be calculated based on my income alone. However, during the SFE application, my income (nor any household income) was not questioned, at all - I did not have to enter any income figures whatsoever.

Is this normal, or should I be getting concerned around about now and reaching out to SFE? There were no questions about my age either. I'm wondering if it's carried over from my previous, part-time application for a different, remote course, but I can't seem to find the details anywhere on my SFE account. Thanks all!

Hi there,

If you're studying a full time course and your previous study is part time, then its correct we won't take this into account if you didn't receive a qualification.

If you're 25 before the start of the academic year then we don't take your parents income into account as you're classed as independent.

Thanks,
Claire

Hi Claire,

I am also over 25 years old, will be living with parents and have been accepted on a pre-registration 2 year maters ( which I believe is funded in the same way as undergraduate?). I am not married and wanted to better understand what this means in terms of maintenance loan eligibility.

many thanks in advance

Cleo

Hi Cleo,

Then we'd assess you as an independent student. You can find out your amount here: https://www.gov.uk/student-finance-calculator just put 0 beside the household income as we wouldn't use this if you are 25 or over. Thanks, Jason
