How to afford being a student in London?

Hi guys.

I’m Scottish and, in January, I applied to universities here. However, I’ve since visited London quite frequently (my partner lives there), and have been toying with the idea of studying in the city.

I withdrew from my offers and applied to QMUL through UCAS Extra, to study English. Today I got an unconditional offer. Should I go, I’m concerned about the cost of living there.

I currently have around £4.5k saved. By September, I reckon I could save at least £3k more, so I’d have just over £7k by the time university starts. I’ve applied to SAAS, but since my parents combined income is £45k, I don’t think I’ll be eligible for anything more than £5k a year. But my parents won’t be giving me any money to help fund my degree.

I considered moving in with my partner and renting with him (he lives in a house-share), but I worry it’d detract from my experience at the university if I didn’t live in halls for the first year. Especially because his house is an hour from QMUL by public transport.

Besides getting a part-time job in London, is there anything I could do to make this a feasible idea? I love the idea of studying there, but don’t really fancy the thought of scraping by every month. Any input or advice would help immensely. Thank you!

The best use of any money which you have is to invest in ticket back to Scotland and remain in such location until your education has been complete.

Upon finishing your degree, I would suggest you look to partake in a trip to Iceland, funded by either savings or credit cards.

Iceland is a much happier country with a far better quality of life.

Say for instance, you're able to borrow £15,850 on credit cards, that's more than enough to provide for at least 5 years in Iceland.

Let's say you take yourself up to the most northern point of Iceland, after that, you need food, shelter, water and heat.

You'd probably spend a good £300 on a decent tent followed by another £500 on illustrated padding for your new home - that leaves just over £15k for the remaining years.

Living in a tent, you'd require, at most, £250 a month on food and other equipment - that's 5 years

Best of luck.
