foundation year or normal undergrad course

hi im thinking of applying to oxford for chemistry for 2025 start but have recently come across the foundation year
information says if youve spent any time in care then you are automatically eligible (i did when i was younger) but im not sure whether to apply for a foundation year or just the normal undergrad course
ive got decent gcse grades and can probably get pretty good a levels and was wondering if anyone who has done a foundation year could give me any more information

thanks
Hi I've moved your thread to the Oxford forum

I would suggest looking at the option not in terms of admissions purposes, and more in terms course preparation. Would the extra year help you to be better prepared to succeed on the Oxford course?

My understanding of the foundation year is that if you are predicted the grades to get a regular undergraduate place, you are not eligible. It says on the FAQs that it is for students who (due to disruption) “are unlikely to achieve the grades required to make a competitive application for direct undergraduate entry”. If you are predicted grades that could take you onto the main course you would be expected to apply for that.

If you have been in care, that will be flagged as part of your regular information and your application will be treated contextually. You might also be considered for the Opportunity Oxford scheme (for candidates who have experienced disadvantage but who are still on track to meet the entry requirements for their course).
