The Student Room Group

Eventful 24 hours

Basically I’ve had a whole day full of bad news and it’s pretty much turned my college life upside down in terms of what I’m doing now and my university applications in autumn. This is (sort of) linked to my GYG but not really. I’ll link it here ( https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showpost.php?p=99329161 ). I could do with reaching more people though. I am (soon to be was) studying A-Level Maths, Further Maths, Computer Science and Statistics with 4 A*s predicted.

First bit of bad news: I’m being forced to drop one of my A-Levels whether I like it or not, I won’t be able to take exams for it at all. Originally I planned to stick with all 4 next year unless if we did Further Stats then I may have dropped A-Level Stats. Anyway, it looks like Stats will be going anyway because of the coursework in Computer Science already being started and I need Further Maths to get into Maths at any top university.

To add to that, I got rejected off my last 2 university programs today. That means I’ve been rejected off of all 10 (yes EVERY SINGLE ONE) that I applied to. HE+ doesn’t count as I got into this through college. I already had very concrete plans for my personal statement and today has thrown them into complete chaos. I definitely couldn’t put one together now good enough to get into Cambridge. Cambridge’s offer rate (i stress OFFER not ACCEPTANCE) for Maths is close to 35% which is quite high but I feel like it won’t take much for 35% of people to have a better personal statement than me now.

Third and finally: I’ve been doubting Computer Science even more too. I’m at the point where I want to restart Year 12 just because I absolutely hate it and none of my plans involve it. I would look at other colleges but it’s too late to apply and given what I’ve said about them and the people there they might not take me anyway (i understand this last bit is completely on me !!!!).

I just wonder what next? Cambridge has been a dream of mine for years and I can’t bear seeing it fading away right in front of me. I’m doing so much reading and research for my personal statement anyway but how could I put this into my personal statement without everything sounding the same and there being practically no variety at all? And would I be doing the right thing by pushing to retake Year 12? I would likely do Maths, Further Maths, Economics and Politics if this was to happen.

If read all that and you got down to the bottom you’re an absolute legend 🙏🙏🙏

Sorry to hear that things are not going to plan. You are clearly a talented person. All i can suggest is not to fixate on Cambridge. there are plenty of other places to have an enjoyable maths degree.

Yeah maybe it’s wrong to be so hung up over one place. Still definitely want to apply there though, scrape together whatever I can pretty much to make a good application.

I’ve nailed down my other choices and they’re still competitive but of course not as competitive as Cambridge. Out of my 5 (Cambridge, St Andrews, Warwick, Durham, Bath) I’d like to think I’d get offers from at least 3 of them even with all these setbacks and only being able to do 3 A-Levels.

Cambridge Maths is about STEP grades. You don't need to sweat your personal statement, it's all about grades and STEP. Most top end Maths degrees are grade focussed, but Cambridge - more or less completely. And they only need 3 A levels. Did I mention STEP grades are the most important? STEP grades!

Yeah I’ve been all about the STEP preparation lately, not at the stage where I can have a go at full questions (the whole 20 marks) but once we’ve covered some Further Maths content I’ll be more than ready.

I’ve been pre-learning some of the stuff on complex numbers and roots of polynomials and I’m really liking it so far.

The personal statement I just need to get me the interview, that’s the crucial thing. It’s pretty certain I’ll get predicted A*A*A* so that doesn’t worry me.

Don’t retake year 12, some schools don’t except resists - ignore this I just checked some do. Not sure about Cambridge, up to you for this
Contact bunch of colleges now and ask if there’s any way to join late?
if you drop a subject drop stats, if you do stats in fm it’ll be very similar content.
Also about the programmes - same situation here. Applied for 9 programs, rejected for 8 (waiting on one but fully expecting a rejection). Want to go to Cambridge for med myself. Truth is we don’t need these programs, yes they’re good but so many people get on the programs don’t get into Cambridge, and vice versa.
I’m sorry this is happening at once, it shouts horrible

Yeah it was a horrible couple of days. I think because I would have done different subjects when retaking Y12 things might have been different (maths, fm, econ, politics).

Even so it’s too late to retake Y12 now at my current college so I’ll be continuing as things are. I’m looking to strike a deal with the administration so I can continue with all 4 A-Levels but it will probably only be possible if we DON’T do the Stats section of Further Maths. They could make me foot the bill for exam entries etc.

I really wanted to avoid going to a different college because I’ve got a lot of enemies at other nearby ones because of school, some of them are well aware of me and because of this it’s highly unlikely that they will take me.

Cambridge Maths is still the goal obviously and from more research it’s encouraging how grades-focussed applications for Maths degrees are in general compared to subjects like Medicine. It’s definitely not over anyway.

Try and convince your teachers to let you do the 4 then. If you have end of year mocks ace them and show that you can cope with the workload and you’d really like to do 4. Maybe make a deal with them if you feel too under pressure in year 13 you’ll drop one.

And you’re right not over at all
