Cambridge MPhil History 2024

International applicant here, just looking to touch base with any future MPhil students currently waiting on offers and scholarships.

I received my offer in early February and got accepted into Jesus College shortly after. Having been unsuccessful with Gates, I’m still holding out for the Trust.

Let me know if you’d like to connect or if you have any questions 🙂

Hi! I’m also an international student, and was accepted for an MPhil in history for 2025. I also received membership at Jesus College (my first choice) shortly after. Assuming that you took up your place this year, would you be able to share your experience with the college, any funding you may have received, how you like the program so far, really anything that you would have liked to have known before you came to Cambridge (and Jesus)? Really appreciate any insight! Thanks!

Hi there!

My thanks for the reply and a big congratulations on being accepted into Cambridge this year 👏

It's great to see a fellow international History MPhil applicant too - didn't have much luck finding our kind here last year.

After going through the whole emotional rollercoaster that is the Oxbridge funding process, I unfortunately wasn't able to receive funding for my MPhil and withdrew my acceptance.

It was obviously devastating, and I took some time off from study to reassess and work.

But I learnt plenty of lessons from it all that will no doubt benefit my future applications. It also was better, in hindsight, to do the Masters program here in Australia, as it's two years (as opposed to 9 months in England), giving me plenty of time to get stuck into research and learn languages.

I started my Masters a few weeks ago at Monash University - a great institution for my focus, Early Modern and Medieval studies.

The plan is to try again at Cambridge for PhD next year - the dream still burns bright!

What about you - did you receive funding? If so, I would love to hear more about your experiences, dissertation, and how you're finding Jesus.

Cheers! 🙂

I’ve been following this thread and just wanted to say thank you it's been really helpful reading about people’s experiences with the MPhil in History at Cambridge.

I’m really eager to study at Cambridge one day, but I’m also realistic about how competitive it is. I’m currently a Russell Group undergrad with a low 2:1, and I’ll soon be starting the PGDL.

I was wondering if anyone had advice or insight into whether there are slightly less competitive MPhils at Cambridge (either within the History Faculty or adjacent departments)? Even just general suggestions about strengthening a future application would be really appreciated.

Thanks so much and wishing everyone here the best of luck with their studies and future applications!
