Networking Opportunities at Kingston: A Personal Expedition

Networking – a word that often evokes images of stuffy conference rooms, cocktail dinners, and awkward small talk. But, it's so much more than that. It’s about forging connections, seizing opportunities, and embarking on adventures that can shape your future in wonderful ways.

At Kingston University, networking isn’t just an abstract concept; it’s a tangible force that permeates every aspect of student life. From engaging seminars to dynamic career fairs and employability workshops, the opportunities to connect with professionals, alumni, and peers are plentiful.

One particular encounter stands out in my memory – my first guest lecture. I had steeled myself for what I expected to be an awkward encounter but to my surprise, I couldn’t have been further from the mark. I was pleasantly surprised to find a warm smile :h:and a genuine interest in my journey. What followed was an engaging session exposing me to the intricacies of my chosen field and a chance to make connections I could never have imagined.

Subsequently, I attended several guest lectures from senior practitioners in the industry, who have worked for organizations like Shell, The New York Times, Iceland, and John Lewis as well as industry experts who run their own consultancies. As an international student in a new country seeking to explore a different career path, it could not have been any better. Having seasoned professionals come in to share experiences, answer questions, and give advice on how to get into the industry, and how to optimize my skills, network, and profile was exactly what I needed.

As my journey at Kingston progressed, I ventured deeper into the realm of networking, sailing beyond the shores of campus to explore the vast expanse of industry connections. Through internships and industry partnerships, I discovered a wealth of opportunities waiting to be seized. Each event was a chance to expand my horizons, connect with like-minded individuals, and glean insights from those who had walked the path before me.

Through these encounters, I discovered the true essence of networking – it’s not about collecting business cards or climbing the social ladder; it isn’t about just selling yourself; it’s about forming genuine connections rooted in shared passions and aspirations. It's about finding mentors who believe in your potential, peers who challenge you to grow, and friends who walk alongside you on your academic and professional journey.:jumphug:
