Do you get a loan if you want to switch course?

I'm currently at the end of my first year of university studying Modern Languages but I honestly have started to hate it. I'm wanting to apply to change course (but remain at the same university) at the start of the next academic year later this September but I heard that SFE won't give you a loan if you change your degree because it counts as a second degree and SFE will only fund the first degree. Is this currently the case or would I be eligible for student finance if I were to switch to a different department and begin first year again?

If you have just one year of previous study, you will be fine. The calculation for starting a new course is:

Length of new course + 1 (gift) year - previous study
