End of first year, not made many friends

I'm at the end of my first year of uni at Leeds and just wondering what second year will be like. I feel like I have not had the most fantastic first year- nothing awful, just haven't made many friends apart from my flatmates despite trying loads of societies and events and stuff. I'm a sociable person and love meeting new people but am just worried that it's too late to make a proper friendship group and to really make the most of uni life. Also just wondering if there is still time in second year to go out if you do a STEM degree. Anyone got any tips? would mainly just like to know if second year is better than first and if people are still open to making new friendship groups. Thanks )))
Dont get disheartened. Second year is a fresh start. Do exactly what you have been doing and join several (new) societies in freshers week. There will be new students joining and who will be keen to make friends.

Hey! To reassure you its definitely not too late :nah: I've just finished third year and most people I would call friends now are completely different to the guys I met in first year. In first year and beginning of second both my grandmas passed away so didn't have much energy for the social side. Anyway, I got to know more people in second year through group projects, and seminars (luckily most of my uni classes were quite small so it was easier to chat with people). If you're not in a group chat with the people on your course make one, or ask around as there might be one.

Third year I came back and most people on my course had gone on placement and the guys from the previous year came back and I think our lot which had stayed on gelled much better with them compared to our original coursemates tbh :p: So it was almost like having a fresh start.

Anon,

It's great that you have made friends with your flatmates this year : ) Hopefully going forward into second year these friendships will deepen. You may have to be more pro-active about these friendships if you are living in different accommodation or far from each other.

Second year will be more demanding, but you can still find ways to meet people or to get to know people better, whether that's hanging out at the library, making time on the weekend or getting on the phone and having a bit of a rant!

All the best,

Hey Anon,

It is never too late to make new friends at university and there are many ways to do so, so don’t be worried! Speaking from my experience, I did a placement year so coming into my final year, I was with a completely new class which worried me at the start. However, it turned out well and I made friends for life.

Next academic year, new students will join societies so that could be an option again. Also going to events and fairs will put you out there and you will make more friends. Making friends doesn’t just happen in the first year so you have nothing to worry about😊

I hope this helps and good luck making new friends.
