Help advice please for btec applied science level 3 !!!

Hi, please read I really need some HONEST advice from anyone!!! For context, I have applied for the first year of college again for BTEC L3 Applied science extended diploma. I am technically meant to be in year 13 but lost a year doing something else. I need help deciding if this course is right for me as my parents do not want me falling behind another year. If anyone got similar GCSE results as me and took this course and did well and received merits/distinctions please let me know!

For my GCSE, I did foundation combined science and received a 54. Though I am able to get into the course with this science grade, science is not my best subject clearly. I've always found biology easier than chem and physics but I do struggle quite a bit. I would love to take this course and go to University to study Biomedical Science, however I am not sure if I would be able to get a Merit or even distinction. Does anyone know of anyone who got lower grades in science GCSE but did great and got Merits in their BTEC?

I've heard from some people that as long as you keep up with the assignments, you will be fine but I am not too worried about the workload, its more the content. Is the content and exams hard for someone like me who did foundation combined science.

Please give me any advice, I'm starting to doubt if this course is right for me and i'm facing quite a bit of pressure and feel like i'm going to fall behind even more if I don't pick the right course/ waste another year. Please be HONEST as if you think I wont do well due to my GCSE grades, let me know, i wont be disappointed. For reference I got a 5 in maths and english if that helps in any way.

Thank you so much for any help and sorry if i'm being dramatic.

If you didn't take the Applied Science BTEC, then what BTEC would you take instead? Is there a GCSE subject that you did particularly well in for which there might be a BTEC Level 3;equivalent?

BTECs are quite different from most GCSEs in that there is a lot of emphasis on coursework rather than exams (although there are still exams). For students who struggle with the sheer amount you need to remember for exams, or who struggle with the stress of exams, then they can be a very good option.

Although I've seen some research papers which attempt to correlate GCSE and A level grades ("If you got grade X at GCSE you're most likely to get grade Y at A level"), I've not seen anything similar that relates GCSE grades to BTEC Level 3 grades. This may be because the way they're assessed is so different.

I don't see any reason why someone achieving 54 in foundation-level Science shouldn't be able to do well in a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Applied Science. Unfortunately, I can provide no evidence either way (and science is all about evidence, after all).

Just out of interest, when you "lost a year doing something else", was that "something else" a qualification (which one?), or was it more of a simple gap year? (If it was a qualification, and it didn't go to plan, that might provide useful additional information.)

Firstly thank you so much for replying and your help!

If I didn't choose applied science, I would choose health and social care, however the career options are quite limited with that course.

Also, In that year, I did an L3 apprenticeship in childcare, I didn't end up completing it as I didn't enjoy it sadly

Thanks for that additional information. The crux of your original post was, "I need help deciding if this course is right for me". I'd say that it is.

You were concerned by the fact that you "did foundation combined science and received a 54", and what that might mean for you likely success in a BTEC Nationals Level 3 Extended Diploma in Applied Science. The ideal way to establish that would be to find some statistics which correlate the GCSEs grades and BTEC grades of previous students. If such data exists I haven't found it (although, to be fair, I haven't look terribly hard).

What I can show you are the proportions of BTEC students who got each grade last year, for each of the most popular five BTEC subjects:

BTEC Nationals Extended Diploma - Grade Statistics - 2023.JPG

You will note that for all subjects the grade profiles are fairly flat: the proportion of students attaining MMM, DMM, DDM, DDD and D*DD are all roughly the same (within a given subject). That's perhaps easier to see visually - the below is for Applied Science specifically.

BTEC Nationals Extended Diploma - Grade Statistics - 2023 - Chart.JPG
So if we assume that you are somewhere around the middle of the pack (not the best, and not the worse), then you're likely to be in DMM to DDD territory. That's the best I can do with regards to the "I am not sure if I would be able to get a Merit or even distinction" part of your question.

These numbers come from Pearson's "BTEC Nationals (2016 - RQF) Results October 2023", here. Don't worry about the reference to 2016 throughout - that the version of BTECs currently being taught. The results themselves are from 2023.
