Business Level 3 Extended

i’m just wondering how an overall grade in a unit works for coursework?
for example i’m doing unit 5 international business, and for assignment 1 i got a distinction and assignment 2 i’m looking for a merit/ distinction but i haven’t handed in assignment 3 so that’ll be a U. How will this affect my overall grade for the unit?

Unit 5, International Business, has five learning aims:

A Explore the international context for business operations
B Investigate the international economic environment in which business operates
C Investigate the external factors that influence international businesses
D Investigate the cultural factors that influence international businesses
E Examine the strategic and operational approaches to developing
international trade

Assessment 1 covers learning aims A and B, assessment 2 covers learning aims C and D and assessment 3 covers learning aim E. Each learning aim has pass, merit and distinction assessment criteria.

To pass the unit you must meet the pass criteria for each learning aim. By not completing assessment 3 you have not met the pass criteria associated with learning aim E, and will therefore not pass the unit. You should therefore expect to be assigned a U for it.

As it says in the specification, here, (with the bold added by me for emphasis):

"When a learner has completed all the assessment for a unit then the assessment team will give a grade for the unit. This is given simply according to the highest level for which the learner is judged to have met all the criteria."

It goes on to clarify this further: "...to achieve a Pass, a learner must have satisfied all the Pass criteria for the learning aims, showing coverage of the unit content and therefore attainment at Level 3 of the national framework."

@DataVenia has correctly stated that you will get a U for U5 if assignment 3 is not done. However as U5 is a Mandatory unit for the Ext Diploma, you MUST pass it or you will not receive a qualification. I suggest you speak to your teacher and hand it in asap. They should still mark it, but as you have missed the deadline then you miss any opportunity to resubmit, so hopefully you get at least an overall Pass. Extr5act below from Pg 353 of the spec;
'In order to be awarded a qualification, a learner must complete all units, achieve a near pass (N) or above in all external units and a pass or above in all mandatory units unless otherwise specified. Refer to the structure in Section 2. To achieve any qualification grade, learners must: complete and have an outcome (D, M, P, N or U) for all units within a valid combination achieve the required units at Pass or above shown in Section 2, and for the Extended Diploma achieve a minimum 900 GLH at Pass or above (or N or above in external units) achieve the minimum number of points at a grade threshold. It is the responsibility of a centre to ensure that a correct unit combination is adhered to. Learners who do not achieve the required minimum grade (N or P) in units shown in the structure will not achieve a qualification'.

Thanks for pointing that out, @bamtutor.

I have a habit of just answering the question as asked (which was "How will this affect my overall grade for the unit?"), and not elaborating with regards to the wider implications.:colondollar:
