Fine Art. Where?

If you had to pick between Newcastle, UAL Chelsea or Manchester Met, which would you choose?

UAL - because its a specialist Art School.

UAL

UAL is second in the world for art and design, The royal college of art is first and that’s because it’s a postgraduate school so technically UAL is the top including undergrad and foundations

I don't think it's as simple as what is top in polls. The polls I have seen don't rate UAL as top. The Ruskin is often top and The Slade. Newcastle comes out best in The Guardian poll.

Manchester seems good and had great facilities, is quite a big city with a thriving art scene and lots of galleries. Newcastle is a nice small town and the university is well regarded. Both of these are much cheaper places to live than London too. Also there are opportunities to socialise and live with students studying other courses, not just Art.

Apparently the facilities at Chelsea are small and there is no print room or dark room. It has the advantage of being in London where there are lots of opportunities to access galleries and the course focuses on getting students to take part in exhibitions. living costs are are high and also travel costs too as willl need to live away form the centre to be able to afford it. UAL has more of an international reputation but I'm hearing it's not as great as it's cracked up to be.

Newcastle or Manchester. They’re more affordable artsy cities. Between the two I’d choose Manchester, it’s close to other cities unlike Newcastle which is right near Scotland so visits to other places take hours to commute to. Manc is within a 2/3 hour distance of most places!

London is very expensive, friends that live there can’t afford to go out and have fun- food shopping is a nightmare! obviously it’s brilliant if you’re rich but most students aren’t.

Choose wisely op 😁

Depends what you want. Newcastle, in the top 2 in the UK a lot of the time, is good for facilities, great for printing, ink and drawing and great student life. Far north though if that's something to consider if you live down south. UAL is probably the best in the UK, and definitely got unreal facilities and great for all disciplines. But it is London so expensive, busy but lots to do. So I would say between them. Lancaster is where I went for my fine art degree. Loved the campus and the city, very small and not a lot happening which was my speed but not everyone's but also tutors were a VERY mixed bag. All depends on you and what you care about.

I chose Newcastle over UAL, where I did foundation. Newcastle seems really nice to live in for students. It was much bigger than I realised and the city has some nice, big galleries. I'd decide based on how much the course and facilities appeal to you. The Newcastle course seems to have an emphasis on Art History. The UAL atmosphere can be a bit intense and unfriendly. But go visit and feel the vibe for yourself!!
